Default Courtneys' 94 Sol - Rags to ritches build

I found her at a local junk yard. 1994 del sol si jdm engine sohc.
She had been there for about a month. She had been picked at and parted out somewhat. Looked under the steering column where the ignition should be and found the wires i needed to start the her . . . . . A battery charge minutes later and the car started right up. Sounded strong. Had a idle that went up and down constantly and steadily. Sounds like a good fixer upper.

Ching ching, And the deal is signed for a verrrrry cheap price! But the car is towed to the house cause it is missing other parts as well.
K, here are some picks to get us started.

Front end is obviously in need of attention.

Missing corner housings , and bulbs , hood needs new paint bad.

One good si rim in the rear driver side. The front driver side tire is a stock 13 or 14 i think and it is way flat. The pasenger side tires are both dougnut tures. LOL. GERRRR So i need four rims and tires now to.

Dents to pull from both left and right side fenders. Driverside near tank is totally mashed in =(

Corner of door is bent out and window will not go up smooth. Missing left tail light.

Passenger door is all bashed in at the bottom. Gonna need a new door for this side. Look at that awefull cancerous rusty fender infestation! YEEK.

Lets take a look inside. Missing : left door latch , ingnition , boot , ****, Ash trey and assembly. air bag , speaker cover , glove box not attached.

Opened the hood and found we are missing :
Master Brake Cylinder , air filter housing - box - filter - hose.

[update]

I searched craigs list and found someone selling a old hatchback civic for 500 bucks. It had four matching rims , so i offered them a price for just the rims and rubber. 200$ later i have four matching 14' rims all with H emblem , Wrapped in Yokohama with a nice amount of tread !
Booyah!

Got off ebay some cheap corner housings. 6$ delivered them to the door. I may get this thing running nice pretty cheaply!

Damn it. Looks like i need to jump on the internets and find the part i am missing. No corner lights today.

I had to install the brake master cylinder for it was completely missing. As i bled each brake caliper i replaced with the new rims and tires. When i got to the last one i found we had a leaky brake hose. It was slit down right before it went into the caliper. Here it the new brake hose installed and working nice. Later down the road we will rplace all four with some steel braided hose. Looks like i'm missing a bracket as well. My CV boot looks like we will have some problems ther as well.

More to come.

I am much furter then this i just need to unload my camera.

Yeah , I am torn between regular ones or this swoopy one i am partial to. My friend has a 95 del sol non vtec. It is all black and has nice side skirts i speak of. I will get some pics eventually. I also want a new front end or a lip for the bottom. We will see. I want to get her on the road before worrying about aesthetics.

Unloaded my camera , working on update as we speak. . . .

[Update]

Here we go again. I unloaded my camera and got all the pics from this week on the computer. If i can get ' em up today we will be up to date.
Here is more of the body damage. I will be addressing all these dents and even prep and painting it myself in this thread. But i need to get some more tools before that post comes.

Seems this door was preyed open with a crow bar or something. I had to give my vin to honda to get a key for the door and trunk locks. It was around $12 bucks.

This looks preyed open forcefully. It will need to be welded into shape again

More damage. I hope it can be pulled with a dent puller. I don't want to have to replace this whole panel.

I took the fender in the pic below - off and banged the hell out of it for thirty minutes with a rubber mallet . Finally got it into a shape slightly resembling the original. More needs to be done here later. at least the door opens now without hitting it.

We might end up just replacing this fender. But it could be good to practice on as well.

And we now open the hood and start the cleaning process.

Some new parts have been added.
Got a stock intake and filter from a friends CRX. He wants it back so i will be getting an AEM short ram.
Also sporting a new battery. Got lucky with the matching vacume tube and battery top.

Ahh look there. I'ts the new Master Cylinder we installed. It was missing when we brought it home from the junk yard.

After we roll it into the car port i tried so start it again and we had major problems. It would not start any more. One spark plug wire / "screwdriver trick" later and i am inspecting the distributor. Seems the screw that hold the rotor on fell of and got all thrown around in there. It chewed up the distributor all over the inside. Ran into plug trouble when installing the new one. Seems the plug the reman'ed distributor has a little plastic prong in the center of the plug. There is a corresponding hole on the other plug but it is not deep enough for the two plugs to be connected together. I ended up breaking the prong off and all was gravy.

On the right is the distributor plug and on the left is the factory plug.
The center tab on the distributor plug must be broken off to work. It is only there to guide the plugs together straightly. I don't know why the hole is not big enough. verry strange.

There to the right of the intake manifold is the little grey and black "Air Idol Control Valve" or AICV. My idol kept going up and down. i read that this little guy is usually the cause.

I took it off and spreyed the hell out of it with some Carburetor cleaner and the straw attachment! Carefull not to spray yourself or let it drip into cuts you may have on your hands like i did.
After letting it dry out overnight i reinstalled it and it idles steady now! but i think it will need to be replaced soon. Some of the screen was damaged and it was really gummed up.

[update]
Rode my bike to the honda dealership and picked up my turn signal plugs i was missing.
Part # 33302-SR3-A01
Now i can attatch the bulbs and get the lights working. the bulbs i bought where wrong so. . . . . .
Went to the local auto zone and also the place accross the street!
Nobody sells amber bulbs for this car.
I can't get away with having white turn signals. I will get a ticket if a cop see this.

Man just look at that damn bumper

This is just embarrising.

A quick look on craigs list and a trip to San Marcus brought this pirate this bountifull bootey!

Hell YEAH!! Lets GO!

More to come.
I have solved the bulb problem and have one of the doors almost replaced. More pics to come tomorrow. . .

Another trip to the local auto parts store and some investigation on my part i found some amber bulbs that work.

The bulbs listed in the computer for my car were SYLVANIA 3497
But those are white. Inspection of the bulb and the rest on the sales display i found some that would work instead!
SYLVANIA 1157A are amber and are the exact same bulb. WOOT WOOT.

Wait a minute. . . something is wrong still. When i turn them on they don't blink. My brake lights don't work either.

To the fuse block Batman!!! we need to find a relay!

When i brought this car home i went through and replaced all the broken and missing fuses. When i get her on the road i need to get all the fluids replaced as well. New plugs and wires sounds like a good idea also.

There is a bug spot for a relay on the fuse block. It is even labeled "Turn" but online i discovered this plug is not used. We need to keep searching for the relay elsewhere. . . . . .

Wait what is that there?

Two 10mm bolts loosen the fuse block to reveal the turn signal relay!
Damn it is hidden back there.

Black and beautiful. Yet a pain in the *** to remove. The relay is suspended with a bracket. It is connected at the top of the relay. The relay slides onto the bracket and a circle tab on the relay top stops it from coming off.
To remove the old one you have to some how push down the circle tab to slide off the relay.

I couldn't figure out how to do that. . . .

I don't know why it has to be the hard way all the time?

Still need to find the cause of the missing brake lights!

Ah ha look. we are missing a brake light switch on the brake petal!

cool project. looks like mostly body work and a few missing interior parts.

the steadily surging idle is mostly likely a dirty or faulty fast idle valve (FITV). you can find this attached to the bottom of the throttle body.

Great job man, its coming along nicely. Im surprised you decided to tackle such a project. It seems like everything is wrong with it lol. I wonder if it really comes out cheaper in the end, you have to buy so many parts to get the work done. Shes coming along nicely though, keep up updated!

Look what i picked up from the Honda dealership.
A new relay and a new brake light switch.

Had to remove the seat to get the brake light switch installed. It took me four tries and a beer to get it installed. there was just no room under the dash for anyone with big hands like me to install that switch. I almost gave up. I was shaking i got so frustrated. Hardest part i have ever installed. There were so many wires blocking the view and access to the location. But i finally got it in there and it works. brake lights functional.

hmmm, with the seat gone i can find out what this plug goes to?

Ahh the bottom of the seat tells the tale.

I guess its the seat belt sensor.

Now to get those doors replaced. . . . .
Lets get the old ones off first.

It is best to remove the panel but re-attach the control for the window. I lowered the window to about halfway so both bolts holding the glass were accessible with a socket. I next removed the window. Then i removed the motor and lifting assembly. It was 6 bolts.

Next i have to unplug the plug coming from door going to the car chase.
to make this easier i should set free the door to open further.i remove the pin from the metal connecting to the car in between the hinges of the door. This allows the door to open further and also makes the bolts that hold the door on accessible. All are 12mm i believe.

Here is the main plug that needs to be disconnected to remove the old door. It is actually two plugs together in one big housing. The housing snaps together on both sides of the door shell.

Stretch back the wire sheathing so to expose the plug housing. tabs to release the housing are sticking inside the door shell. After you push that back , on the top and bottom of the plug cluster there are tabs that release the plugs. they should then slide out from the door. Now the door can be removed.

I got the car for 1G. Not a bad price considering the small amount of parts it is missing. I took it for a short test drive and found the CV joints will need to be replaced. they are clicking on one side for sure. I think next weekend i will tackle that task.

Both new door shells and front bumper were an even $100. Good deal considering one door shell usually goes for $75

More on the door replacement tomorrow. It got to dark to work i had to put it all up for the night.

That plug under the seat is for the seatbelt sensor. Without it being plugged in, the light for the seatbelt wont show up on your dash. I found out mine was disconnected lol. So I connected it and voila, little red light pops up on the dash for the seatbelt not being connected!

Ahh , its a nice day today . I think i will finish installing the doors today. But first ! It's time for some TACOS!

side note
Last night i ordered a B&M Short shifter online. Cant wait to get that puppy put on. My last Honda was a 98Civic EX. Best money i spent on it was the short shifter. Anyone who doesn't know , it totally changes the driving experience!

I want to get an AEM intake , probably a short ram. I cant find a good price for one yet. I want to find one under $100 bux.

More pictures.
I completed the doors today. The new doors came with the small triangle windows. but one had bad tint and one had none. I decided to remove the old ones from my old doors and use them. Then all my tint would remain the same.

Here is a better pic of the plug that goes into the door. You can see where the tabs are in this picture. It was a bitch to get off. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Here is the new door shell bolted up to the hinges. Notice there are no guts in this shell. No latch , handle , window mechanism , lock , . . . .

All this i have to take off the old door and put it on this one.

Here are the door handle and closing latch and lock. I made the mistake of disconnecting these from each other on the first door removal.

The best way to get both of these out and back into new doors is to remove the window , window mechanism , and the window guide rail closest to the back of the door "near the outside door handle"
Once all that is out of the way remove both bolts holding the handle on "there are holes in the inside part of the door shell for a socket with an extension to access them easy". and remove the three screws holding the latch mechanism on the door. Then while they are still connected work them out of the door through on of the holes. Reverse process to install on the new door. The whole point is if you disconnect them from each other it is hard to get them back together.

Here is an inside the door shot of the handle and latch stuff all connected together.

Here is mine slipping into the new door.

Here is the handle all the way on . . . . and my friend posing with the product.

Ok i wanted to show you how to get the little window out and replaced.
Here is how. > First this has to be done with the big window all ready removed.
At the top corner of the little widow you will see the rubber that stretches like a big upside down V over the two sides of the window. on the top there is a little Philips head screw to remove. Now you can grab the striping that is lodged in the down

track for the big window to slide , and pull it all out. It is easy to get back in so dont panic. This will make it able to stretch the top of the striping off the top of the window like in this pic below.

Now with all the stripping away you can see another screw the same size just below where the last one was. Remove that screw also.

Now you just have loosten that down track and the small window will wiggle out. Look at the pic below. the top of the door you can see two bolts i removed to free the down track.

Once the track can move to the left a bit the window will wiggle out. Notice those three holes and bolts to the right of the ones i removed. I cant figure out what those are there to hold but it doesn't effect the window so don't worry about them.

Now that the little window is in and the handles are hooked up we need to put the big glass back in. Here is our window mech laying on the ground.

Remember i rolled the window down till both bolts were exposed when we removed the window. Well it will be at the same spot now when we put the window back in.

Two bolts hold the big window to the mech. To get the window in i disconnect the upper bolt from the back of the window track. this lets the track move a little and makes it easier for the window to slide in. then i line up and tighten the track in place at the top. the bolt is hidden by the rubber stripping end cap at the back of the door. there is one screw and one plastic pushin holding the rubber end on the corner of the door. Don't rip the rubber yall.

Here is the finished day.
Both doors replaced and all the insides switched to the new doors.
Man i need to get some paint soon!
What do you all think? Should i go all black?

More interior pics. I cleaned and vacuumed and wiped down everything inside. Also got a few pieces of craigs list from another del sol being parted out. All im missing is the ash trey and the cover to the pas SRS.
The cover i will have to make myself later on. I want to put a dvd player in there or something. maybe a stash spot.

looking allot better now. cant wait for the short shifter to come!

A job well done . . . .
Here is a pic of my roomates who helped me in no way what so ever!
They did give me a beer though. Thanks guys for the moral support.

More to come ! ! !

I took her out on a test drive after all the work was completed. Drives nice and strong. Start up is a bit rough but i think its just the distributor needing adjustment. CV joints are gonna need replace. I will tackle that one next weekend. Till then keep your rubber on the road!

See you next weekend.
