Cooling system problems
I have a 1998 Honda Civic Dx with 164,000 miles on it. I have taken extremly good care of my car, changing all fluids at least once a year and the motor oil every 3,000 miles. When changing the coolant, I always replace the thermostat, which I just did roughly a month ago. Recently, when the car is stopped it heats up. With the air conditioning on it heats up faster. However, when driving the car 45 mph or faster the temperature goes back to normal levels.
When analyzing the situation it seemed that the fan was not coming on until 1/2 to 3/4. Normally the fan comes on a little over a 1/4 and cools it right back down to 1/4. My initial thought was to replace the sending unit located on the thermostat housing that controls the fan. I replaced the sending unit with a new sending unit from Honda. It was fine for a few days and then last night it starting heating up again. I noticed that the coolant overflowed out of the overflow container. This morning, I took the radiator cap off and the water level was low. Two days ago I ran the car with the radiator cap off to make sure I had plenty of radiator fluid in there and then recapped it. I even ran the heater while I was going that to make sure that I got a topped off fluid level. After all that I filled the overflow up to the hot line. I checked all the hoses and they all seem fine. When I changed the coolant a couple of months ago I also changed the hoses.
My thoughts are that it might be a bad radiator cap or temperature gauge sending unit. I was going to put in a new Temp guage sending unit, new thermostat and new radiator cap. Does anyone have any ideas?
