Default Civic VX Efficiency

Why was the Honda Civic VX with the 1.5 liter D15Z1 engine so fuel efficient?

vtec-e. The 5 wire o2 sensor lets the car go into a lean-burn mode, the intake air has a swirl effect in the combustion chamber, the gearing, its lighter than the other hatches, it has less rotating mass (lighter wheels, lighter flywheel) thats just off the top of my head. but there so slow, im giving my vx to my dad.

While the Insight had an optional CVT, I think he was probably thinking of the Civic HX, which also had an optional CVT (which is not recommended for purchase since there are so often issues with them).
