Civic 97 EX, D16Y8 motor, P1362 error code
Hi all,
I have had the CEL on in my 97 EX Civic (Manual Trans.) recently at 125k miles. The error code was P1362. I changed the spark plugs and wires and then reset the ECU. The CEL pops up right after cranking the engine once again. The distributor seems to have 3 sensors including the TDC, which is the innermost sensor in the distributor housing. I ran some resistance checks on the 9 pin (4-3-2 layout) male connector. The values were: CKP = 380 Ohms, CYP = 375 Ohms, and the TDC = ~ Ohms. This indicated that the TDC sensor was bad. Ground checks of each pin w.r.t the engine body was fine. None of the three sensors were found to be grounded.
Before i went ahead with the distributor replacement (Cardone Select ~ $200), i wanted to know if the TDC sensor alone could be replaced. Being the inner most component of the distributor, i might have to remove all the fasteners behind the rotor disc. I wonder if anybody has successfully installed a new TDC sensor and got rid of the P1362 CEL issue.
I have not been able to find the part number for the TDC sensor. If someone can point me to right part number, it would be really helpful.
I have searched for this issue in many forums including here but i have not been able to find a definitive answer to my queries.
Thanks in advance.
Kris.

The resistance of the CYP indicates that it too is bad. It is possible to replace the distributor sensors, but I don't know where you can buy them or what specific specs you would look for. However, if the distributor has near or more than 150K miles, it would be wise to replace the entire distributor. And based on many members' experiences, buy only an OEM replacement.

The link below my signature shows the various parts. I wonder if buying the Distributor Housing assembly ($240) plus the rotor ($16) should suffice, reusing the other components such as Ignition coil assembly and the leak cover, to cut down on the costs. The distributor housing should have the TDC and the other two sensors, which is what i need. Any suggestions would be very useful.
Thanks,
Kris

Compare the price (and shipping/handling charges) at Majestic Honda. The price for a new OEM distributor housing is $230. You may need to call to find out the price of the entire distributor.

Majestic Honda seems to be cheaper than the other link i had posted. I chose the distributor housing and other parts such as washers and rotor for a total of $272 with shipping and handling. Thanks for the tip.
My only doubt is if the distributor housing will have all the sensors that i need to fix my CEL issue. I also would like to know if putting together the rest of the distributor would be relatively easy?
Thanks,
Kris

Yes, the distributor housing carries all three distributor sensors. You are covered there by replacing the housing.
When you have the funds to do so, also replace the other distributor parts, such as the coil. This will ensure that your ignition system will not fail you for many thousands of miles.
Yes, putting the distributor together is easy. Post any specific questions that come up.

There are some used OEM distributors being offered in our marketplace as well as ebay (with top seller ratings). They seem to have TD-80U as the compatible distributor. Also, i wonder if anybody has had a bad experience with such used distributors. Being under $100 makes them irresistible for a grad student like me. I expect to do about 10,000 miles per year.

UPDATE: CEL issue fixed. After replacing the distributor, the CEL has not popped up in the 1200 miles since the fix. It was indeed the TDC sensor going bad.
