check engine light goes on and off *searched*
this happens usualy when the weather is hot.
im driving on the freeway going 80~90 then my check engine light goes on. i pull off the freeway come to a stop and the enging is idling at 1200 rpm. there is alot of black smoke comming out of my exhuast. i turn off the car. turn the ignition to #2 and the check engine light goes off. i start it and it runs normal. but when i start driving it again the check engine light comes back on.
my 1995 civic ex with 167000 miles

i checked the for cel codes, but none. just the srs light keeps blinking.

does your car choke up or sputter or stink because it kinda sounds like it might be your your cat but im not positive.

If your check engine light is coming on, it has to be throwing a code. By the black smoke it seems like it might be o2?

my accord did that when my stupid short-ram was a little out of position and wasn't sealing properly at the throttle body. check all that stuff, and make sure the gas cap is on nice/tight. the cel comes on if the caps not tight enough

its rich alot of black smoke.
my 02 is just 4 months old, but its not oem. it is also spliced. can this be the problem?

that happened to me with my chipped p28...i couldnt go passed 4000 rpm...but beofre it did it the check engine light was coming on and off...so u might wanna check ur computer....
