Anyone change there axles before and not drain their tranny fluid? I pulled out the axles cause a friend said i didnt need to drain the fluid so after the axles came out i stuffed shop towells in to stop the leak after reinstalling axles i thought it should stop leaking but still leaks. Im pretty sure my axle seals are good still im guessing the leak had something to do with not draining the fluid first. anyone know what i can do? are my axle seals ruined? should i drain the fluid and clean around the seals?? thanks guys

btw:the car is a 2000 civic si

You probably pushed the seals passed there point when you put the shop towel in. Its always less of a mess to do the axles by draining the trans.

whats the easy way out of this? im really lazy now and tired of working on my car as of lately. I just finished doing my 5 lug/brake swap plus i still have to fix my braking issues. thanks again

are all the b-series axle seals the same??

i know all b-series axles are the same but the crv axles im not sure, but i would imagine are the same.

no the intermediate shafts change from 90-93 to 94+

wat about the seals in the tranny are those the same? i got a gsr tranny and acura's like 20 min away for me and honda's down the street. Will the b16 tranny seal do?

as long as the car is leveled you will not have problem with fluid leaking

The easy way is to replace them like the manual says to. It's not our fault that your worthless 5lug swap costs an arm and a leg.

when you say that its "our" fault 5 lug is worthless who else is sharing your opinon? speak for yourself i dont see anyone else in here saying 5 lug is worthless. Id like to know why you think going 5 lug is worthless and who said anything about 5 lug costing an arm and a leg?? please lets stick to the facts.

To change axles you MUST drain the tranny oil if car is level. Either you drain it before you pull the axle, or it will drain it self when you pull the axle. If it didn't drain the WHY THE expletive would you need a axle seal????

yes you can. i do mine one at a time. i'll jack it on one side only so that way the fluid will shift to the lower side and won't leak out.

After the axles were put back in i still had some leakage

I’m just wondering why you guys told him to drain the fluid knowing you never have to drain it to change axles

If you jack up the side of the car really high, it is unlikely that you will loose much fluid... maybe a little bit, but not much. If one were to jack up the front of the car from the middle of the lower core support... essentially lifting the entire nose with both wheels parallel to the ground so that both wheels could be removed at the same time... then you will lose a TON of fluid when the axles are removed.

You must be careful when installing the axle into the new seal. The seal lip must not fold! I have seen it many times, brand new seal installed and soon as the monkey head mech puts the axle in the seal lip folds in and the trans leaks.
