Default CEL code 90 - EVAP System: CVS Valve and Canister Problem ????

Last week my 2000 SiR check engine light went on. Then I checked the engine code by myself. It had 9 long flash which is code 90. According to 96-98 Civics, code 90 is "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected in th Fuel Tank Area" so I guess my 2000 should have the above problems. I took my car to the garage and the mechanic checked the fuel tank, hoses, everything is fine and no leak. The mechanic turned the CEL off for me but it went on again yesterday. I took my car to the Honda dealer today for diagnoses. They told me that the problems are from the CVS Valve and the Canister in the EVAP system. I don't wanna fix it in dealership because they will charge me $600 for the parts and labour which is really expensive............
does anyone know how to fix the problems and any suggestion to me?

Thanks

there is a few things you guys need to understand about evap systems. I work for toyota and our cars are the worst for evap problems. things such as a loose gas cap or poor sealing gas cap can cause a evap code. Here's what i would try, look at the filler neck opening, is it in good shape? no rust? Then try a new gas cap. Go buy a OEM cap, not one from the parts store, they suck. Make sure the dealer gives you a new gasket for the gas cap. Next, if that does not fix it, I would try the valve. these are know to get varnish from the fuel vapors and either break down the seal inside or get stuck. Both situations can cause a code. One thing I left out which is a given, is if you are running a swap, make sure you are running the right coponents for the ECU you are using. Most honda/acura's use similar systems. But if you did something dumb like remove your canister during a swap, you screwed! The very last thing I would try is the canister. Just b/c they cost so much. I'm not saying it's not bad, but I would try these other things first on my own before I droped $600 at the dealer.

I had a similar problem. Not sure what the exact CEL was, but it was an EVAP by-pass problem. The dealer tried to screw me in paying about $600 for a new ECU and a EVAP by-pass valve. They tried to convince me that the ECU wasn't covered. But, there is a Federal law that covered certain emmision problems. I called my warranty place and they said that they told my dealership that my ECU was covered. However, the dealership told me it wasn't. I informed them that I spoke to Marry Ann at my warranty place and she told the tech that it was. None-the-less they couldn't say anything, because I had them by the *****. They waived all the fees and threw in a free oilchange.

I was lucky and was still under my extended warranty. A month later I would have been out of my extended warranty. Do your homework before you pay them.

Hope I made sense, I've had a few beers!

the cvs valve is going to be the valve that controls the flow of evap vapors from the canister to the engine, if I'm right. Let me talk to my boy who works at honda to be sure, but I think that is what honda calls it.
