Default car won't warm up all the way

no it's not that my thermostat is stuck open. my car (EJ6 with d16y7) will get up to operating temp sometimes, not very often though. most other times, i just can't get the engine to warm up sometimes. it will stay at or just above the bottom of the temp gauge.

is there anything i can do to make my engine run hotter?

What pressure radiator cap do you have? But yeah, it might just be cold outside and everything is working as it should.

So you already tried a new thermostat then?

Whats the Outside temp and how long are you running it?

As far as making it run hotter?
Saskatchewan thermostat maybe?

How can you be sure it isn't the thermostat? Even when it is open all the way you can get up to normal operating temperature if you spend a lot of time idling or in heavy traffic where air isn't flowing to the radiator.

If you already tried a new thermostat then you might have a faulty gauge or a bad temp sensor.

You could always use the old trick of putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. I wouldn't do that if I were you.

may be your heater core, your heater should warm but but your motor wont run as hot in the winter. It sounds like a heater core issue

too much water in the radiator causing it to freeze?

This would not stop his engine from getting hot. If anything his engine would get hot, but he would be cold

Yeah, a Saskatchewan thermostat.

Unless he has already changed the thermostat, I would start there,

I had no idea that putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator actually had a name!

I saw that you mentioned a Saskatchewan thermostat in your earlier post and I had no idea what you were talking about. I was thinking it was some specially made Thermostat designed for the cold Canadian winters.

i can idle the car for as long as i want and it still won't warm up. it is winter here in upstate ny. this week has been really warm (45-50*F) but today has cooled down a bit again(back to the mid 10's).

I will try the cardboard but won't that be a little ghetto?

but yea, i either have to choose normal temperature engine or sorta warm air, because when i turn the heat on, the temperature gauge drops like a rock.

as for coolant, i am running 60% antifreeze/40% water as my winter mix. in the summer i run the 60 water/40 antifreeze.

temperature and gauge are fine. they work normally when the engine is warm and warm up with the temperature.

I am having the same issue, my heater does not blow hot, warm at best even after an hour of straight driving is mildly cold conditions (60 F) the gauge rest steadly a few notches above cold with the heater on or off. I am apt to any suggestions but am low on cash and wonder how a thermostat would prevent an engine from heating up after hard driving conditions ( high revs for long periods)?

check to see what degree thermostat you have in your car, if the engine pretty much stock to where you don't need to run a cooler thermostat, you can get away with a 195 easily.

also do you have a jumper wire in your fan connector? this will make the fan run all the time, thus keeping the coolant very cooled down, also try the fan switch located in the thermostat housing.

i have this same problem, but i run a 170 degree stat to keep my engine cool cause of the mods i have done to my engine i experience more heat than a more less stock engine

thermostat switches can get faulty with time. take a look at it and you may have to replace it. or your sensor needs to be checked out.

if it does end up being your gauge , good luck getting that fixed.

You have to understand thethermostats job. Most people get all mixed up in what it is supposed to do. It is there to control MINIMUM operating temperature by controlling how long the coolant stays in the engine. Meaning a 170 degree thermostat will open sooner than a 195 degree one, allowing coolant to spend less time in the engine.

So apply that to a stock thermostat. Works great when it is new. Coolant stays in the engine until it hits around 195 degrees and the thermostat is fully open by 215 degrees. ( I could have that backwards, it may start to open 20 degrees early and be fully open by 195) As the thermostat ages and becomes less effective, opening earlier than it should, or it sticks open and coolant is not kept in the engine long enough to heat up properly, meaning that your engine never gets up to operating temperature.

This is especially true in the winter months when the ambient outside temperature is low enough to aid the radiator and fan in keeping coolant cool.

Make sense?

just get a thermostat that opens at a hotter temp.
