Default 96 EX interesting lock problem. (solved)

Spent all afternoon looking and reading threads but couldn't find one with my problem. Just brought home my first Honda Civic, wife has an odyssey w 220 on it. so I'm sold on reliability. But just experienced my first problem. The driver side door lock works fine when the doors closed. It works w the power lock button and when done manually it locks passenger door too. Now when I open the door and try to lock it, like when getting out. It won't lock, manually or from the button, additionally the key does nothing when turned from the outside. It works fine on pass door and trunk. This is frustrating. Any help is appreciated.

The driver door won't lock when open unless you pull the inner or outer handle. This is normal and designed to keep you from locking the keys in the car.

Hahahahahaha wow do I feel dumb.

I'll test it out when I go to work tonight, still wonder why I can't lock or unlock w the key from the outside. . Maybe I'm just not holding the handle up.

Thanks for quick reply

I presume you mean, "while the door is open", correct? But when closed everything operates as it should? This is by design. It is to prevent you from locking your keys in the car since you have to lock it from outside with the key. If the door is open and you pull on the inner handle while pushing the lock it will operate.

I can almost guarantee your Ody works like this also.

Yep, it a bit tricky to get it to lock w the key. But unlock works fine.

Spray some WD40 or lock lubricant into the key hole. Then work the key back and forth to see if it loosens up.
