I believer you can use 10w 30 (not sure) as a temporary replacement, but the thing is that motor oil is harder on the transmission and wears it faster than Honda MTF. Why not just suck it up and drive 10 min. to your local Honda dealer and grab some?

I've never used anything besides pennzoil 10w30 in my honda manual trannies, and i've never had any problems. just make sure you NEVER use synthetic oil, as you gotta have some friction between the synchronizers and the gears. still, i'd go with honda MTF <--- can't lose

Why would you put something designed for a domestic car in your honda? i.e. Synchromesh! That stuff is way to expensive and not even worth it in my opinion.

Re: (btleier)
I just use Castrol GTX 10w30. Never had any problems. Also telling a guy to eat a dick because he's telling you exactly what is written in the Helms service manual is pretty messed up to you.
As long as you don't use synthetic you should be fine. Also don't use anything thinner than 10w30.

you people who put GM synchromesh in your hondas are ******* idiots. synchromesh is thick as hell. it will cost you hp, and lessen the life of your tranny. the reason DSM guys use it is because DSMs are supposed to run 75w90 gear oil, which has about the same viscosity as synchromesh. hondas recommended using 10w30 up until around 95, when they refined 10w30 into gold, and called honda MTF. synchrmesh IS NOT, again: IS NOT the best stuff on the market. whoever said that needs to go buy a damn chevy and go back to hazzard county. NEO is probably the best stuff on the market if you want to start talkin ****. but no, do not ever run ****** synchromesh in a honda

quick question. when was the last time that you opened a bottle of GM synchromesh? if i recall correctly GM trans use a oil that is almost like ATF. i work for Chrysler and we have Isuzu there as well at the dealership. i see verytime they do a trans that it has a thin red fluid that comes out that looks like ATF. incase some of you don't know Isuzu is partially owned by GM. BTW these trans are commiing out of the hombre wich is just a s-10. and i have also heard nothing but good stuff about running the GM synchromesh. i will be sure to buy a couple of quarts of it tomorrow as i'm leaving the dealership tuesday.

Re: (FMIDRC Racer)
my old 94 gsr manual says to use 10w30. i belive i read some where on here a while back about the honda mtf. i dont think it was out when the older honda's were availble, so the manual says to use 10w30. since the honda mtf has been out tho, honda recommends that.

Re: (VTECDC2)
I have used 10-30w in about 15 different Honda trannys. I bet they have gone 50k miles cumulatively with no problems. It seems like the tranny is a much milder environment (cleaner and cooler) than a motor so engine oil should be up to the task. dealer is quite a drive from here so it works for me.

You're full of ****, A.), and B.) how is it costing you HP again? I mean, I understand that you know every damn thing there is to know about Honda transmissions, but insinuating that GM synchromesh is viscous enough to slow down the rotation of your engine is absolutely assinine. You're a tool, no more talking .

The reason DSM's use it (the only ones I know of are AWD) is because they have a transaxle and a differential: completely different setup. Even in the non TSi/GSX models, do you really think that their transmissions are any different than ours on a fundamental level? Of course they're not.

Honda MTF isn't any different than what you can get at Valvoline: they just package it and put a waranty on it so if your tranny bombs they'll absorb the repair cost. Valvoline SynPower GL5 is the greatest **** in the world, if you wanna start throwing around names like you think you know anything.

Feeling the footsteps? You scared that nobody is going to corroborate your assinine rambling? You need a mod to step in and tell the rest of us that you're right or wrong, like I give a **** if any of them thinks they know better than I do. I work for Valvoline, son, and you don't need to be spreading misinformation around this forum. Keep at least 10w30 motor oil (or better) in your tranny and your car will perform as it's supposed to.
End of story.
