Can a short shifter cause 3rd gear grind
I'm looking into buying a 92 del sol and I'm just noticed that there is the infamous 3rd gear grind. Anyway, it's a b16 engine and I noticed that the throw is really short. The man selling it is selling it on behalf of someone else so he doesn't know if it's a short shifter or not and I've been doing SO MUCH reading on the 3rd gear grind and I've concluded that it could be 1 (or a combo) or 3 things.
1. Syncros are bad
2. Short shifter
3. Rear motor mount is shot
I'm just wondering on number 2, how much would a short shifter cause a grind. It only happens in 3rd as well, only when shifting quickly at high speeds. This is the first thing I want to target seeing that I'm almost certain that there's a short shifter....unless the del sols have a really short throw. First del sol I've ever driven.

syncro.. I wouldn't blame something like that on a short shifter....

Yah, I'm pretty sure it's the syncros, after reading all the threads about b series and their tendancies towards grinding 3rd, I just wanted to see what the likeliness it could be the other two options.
Just wondering how some people change the rear motor mounts and their grinding goes away. Anyway, thanks for the input guys.

throw some syncro mesh in there and call it a day. but yes a short shifter can cause this. because the throw is shorter you may be shifting faster then the tranny.

After reading the endless stuff on syncromesh I'd love to try it, however, I'm currently living in New Zealand, and GM is not so big here and I asked some of the mechanics about syncromesh and they looked at me like I was on crack! haha

Re: (sohcvtec1995)
Little bit of a discovery, but I don't know if this makes a huge difference on what it may be. I just found that when the car has been sitting overnight and then I take it for a drive and the engine is still cool, shifting into third is not a problem, it doesn't grind at high rpm or anything, but once the car warms up, it starts to grind. Is this an idicator for the transmission fluid and that it needs to be changed? And again, I checked into it and yah, there's not much of a following for GM syncromesh in the country and on top of that, shipping might be a problem.

if he's shifting before the clutch is engaged, it will not be the short shifter, but more like driver error. so no a short shifter will not make your gears grind.

i see it as.. if the 3rd gear was bad before.. its gonna get worse and i personally dont think that a short thow will help matters!

if his third gear is bad, i still don't understand how a short shifter will affect this matter. it's all about driver skill. whether it would be an oem or short shifter, if he's driving it like this it'll still worsen.
