Cam, Timing or Tune Issue? NO HIGH END POWER

Cam, Timing or Tune Issue? NO HIGH END POWER
I'm not sure if there's a place for intros or anythign like that on this HUGE azz site but I'll probably post one later as I just joined today. Anyways, I've lookeda round a little on what I thought was a common issue but haven't found much. Here's the deal. I have a 2000 Si with a true Japanese GSR swap (OBD1). It has Buddy Club Spec+3 cams and Buddy Club valvetrain. I bought the car with this stuff in it but saw the reciept for the work done so I know it's all there especially after having done the valve lash adjustment. When I bought the car however it had the GSR factory ecu in it and it ran liek crap. My friends stock b16 Si would walk me all day. So I figure I need a tune since it's got cams and supporting mods. I get an ecu through Phearable and the car runs alot better but it's definitely rich as any basemap probably would be. The issue is that just before my vtec crossover the car bogs and loses its pull. Then once it's actually in vtec it doesn't really feel like it's got much more than it did below the crossover. It basically seems like I'm making all my power before vtec and not up high like our engines usually do. It did this before the new basemapped ecu but alot worse. Obviously the car could use a final street or Dyno tune but aside from that, it seemed like I had heard of this problem before happening when you have incorrect timing or something adjusted wrong. The car has the cams, valvetrain, Blox IM, Buddy Club cam gears, CAI, Vibrant header, HKS exhaust. I had a gsr eg hatch before that was quite a bit more built so I have an idea what cams and some breathing bolt ons can do. Obviously I don't expect this car to be as quick as an all motor high compression eg hatch but it still shouldn't bog where it's supposed to shine the most. There's really no other symptoms besides what seems like an excessively loud valvetrain. I know cams cause the "sewing machine" sound and the eg hatch had JUN 3 cams which are alot more aggressive than the Buddy Club Spec+3 yet this Si is just as loud as the hatch was (valvetrain wise). Dunno if thats just how these cams sound or what but figured I would note it. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm almost to the point that I just want to swap the BC Spec+3's for some stock GSR cams!

i didnt feel liek reading your long post, but if your complaining about valve train noise after a cam install... adjust your valves to start.

WOW. your way off....
I don't know the specs of those buddy clubs, but it sounds like you need vtec to be setup later in the rpm range. So a tune is all you need.

It has adjustable cam gears. My buddy had this problem once before. The intake cam was retarded 4 degrees and the exhaust was advanced 4 degrees. Exactly the opposite of what you want.
check the degreeing on your camgears.

90rex - If you had read the long post I stated that I've already done the valve adjustment. I'm not complaining about the loud valvetrain, just stating that it doesn't seem like it should be as loud as a more aggressive cam would be.
Hanmin - The specs on the BuddyClub cams are
intake: 296 degrees 11.4 mm
exhaust: 290 degrees 11.8mm
as taken from BuddyClub's website.
JUN3 Cams are
intake: 265 degrees 12mm
exhaust: 265 degrees 11.5mm
I'm not technical enough to know exactly how those two relate but I agree with you a tune is needed. I just wandered if I coul dpinpoint exactly what causes this dip in power just before vtec. Thanks for the reply.
jtmartin96civic - I haven't checked the timing with a light or anything but the cam gears are zeroed out right now (centered in there adjustment range). The dizzy also looks to be centered. Should the timing not be dead stock with this cam setup? Once again, thanks for the relpy.

I wish I could tell you one thing or another but honestly you're doing the same thing I would do. See if you can get on a dyno with an experienced tuner and thats where I would start playing with your cam degreeing and figuring out why you're bogging on vtec crossover. good luck.

alrite, well thanks guys. I was reading up on these cams on here and everyone seemed to love them after they were tuned of course. They all thought that advancing the intake cam 2 degrees helped the butt dyno alot but I tried that and didn't feel much if anything. oh well, hopefully a tuner can figure it out.
