Default Building my first B18B1

Ok so i picked up a almost complete B18B1 yesterday for $130 only thing wrong was it had a spun bearing. I took the motor apart last night, and low and behold it did have a spun bearing, yet it had not begun to score the crank. So into the big sink with purple power it went, and 12 hours later i have a clean block ready to be painted black, and it has been honed.

I plan on buying an ebay turbo kit, and scrapping the turbo and wastegate, and grabbing a T3 from a junkyard and a Hks wastegate. I want to send the head to the machine shop to have it ported and polished, and possibly bigger valves put in, with that I'm thinking the bisimoto stage 3 or 4 cams would be good for it.

i want to build around 250-300 hp. Im not sure on what to do for rods and pistons yet. Money is an issue, but this is easily a 6 month project for me, so i have time and money to save up.

So really im looking for what rods and pistons to use with my stock ls crank and be a reliable 250-300 hp with a turbo. not sure on what size yet.

You dont need any of that to only make 300 hp, a good stock block can do that just fine. If thats all the power your looking for just rebuild the motor and save your money for the turbo kit and tune.

for that hp level dont focus on head work ie porting...a good 5 angle valve job will help. maybe upgrade spings in the head... never a bad a idea.

awesome. i would like to upgrade the pistons atleast and get it down to 9.0:1 compression at the minimum. i drive 50 miles each day i go to work and can't afford to have it break down on me, yet i don't even know what i'm gonna put the engine into yet, im thinking a 4 door dc or ek.

the compression on a ls is 9:1. and a good upgrade would be valve springs maybe a stage 1 cam and you might need a map sensor i made 231 whp with a ls i did a compression and leak down test it came out pretty good so i decided to boost it. It only last me about 4 months. The piston gave up but im thinking it could be cause of the tuner so make sure you get a good tune.

I would say upgrade your rod's if anything. The oem's can handle the power but if I were in your shoe's that would be the only thing I would upgrade to get 250-300whp. While I save up for a vtec head.

a d series has made 300hp on stock internals but i wouldn't recommend pushing a motor to its max on a dd. i would get rods and pistons honda heads do generally flow better then most stock. instead of port n polish i think it would be a better advantage to get a vtec head with some cams. good to see another 4dr int the mix.. i love my 4dr

He has a b series not a d series. You dont need all that for a 250-300 whp, he would be good with a nice turbo setup and a good tune.

even with a B series most people will tell u 300 is a good limit to follow on stock internals. some have done more but some have broke with less hp. hes looking for a bit more id rather have a built motor i know can take the abuse then something that could blow any minute depending on the tune.

yeah i would upgrade the pistons and rods.then maybe save up for a vtec head if you want major power cause i just went lsv turbo and spent about 500 even though i got the head for free...but then again i do feel a big difference...well what im saying i think i could have made about the same about of power just staying boosted ls by upgraded my pistons and rods which would maybe even be a little cheaper if i did have to pay for the head

Like everyone else said it is practically unnecessary. You can safely make 250-300 whp on a bone stock LS motor with the correct boost parts, a head gasket, ARP's and a good tune.

so far ive purchased new main bearings, thrust washers, lower gasket/seal set, arp rod bolts, and arp main studs.

im probably gonna stay with the stock rods and get a set of NPR 8.5 compression pistons.

just curious as to which direction the thrust washers go on? i was trying to be careful and pull the engine apart slowly so i could remember how they went, but as soon as i pulled the crank, they came out.
