Not long about 50 miles or so? Think about it its a metal tab rubbing on your disk or drums wearing a grove into them. How long do you want to let that happen before you need to replace that too?

Its' already doing damage. If you are asking this question, maybe you shouldn't be driving. I'm not intentionally trying to offend you, but why do people get cars and think they can just put gas and oil in it and it's ok. It cost money to maintain a vehicle, and if you cant afford to, those people need to be finding alternative methods of transportation.

You have no idea how much time, money, and effort I put into my car.
Alot more than just gas and oil.
I recently replaced the starter, flushed the coolant, flushed the brakes, replaced door handles after thieves tried breaking in,replaced spark plugs, replaced transmission fluid, replaced tranny fluid, taken my coilovers in and out more times than i can count trying to get the proper ride height, installed subframe spacers, replace fuel pump, replace engine mounts, installed intake, plus oil changes on top of that. All in about the span of a few weeks on my garage floor with no power tools and a shitty spare tire jack.
On top of that I work 54 hours a week on OTHER people's cars at a shop as an apprentice.
That is part of the reason why I am still driving with the wear indicators. I need my vehicle to get to work. If I don't go to work,I don't get money. If I don't make money I can't buy new parts.
I don't have the luxury of dropping my car off at a shop and spending large sums of money on something I can do myself when the time comes around.
And on top of that the rotors and pads are on order already, just waiting on them.
Anyways the wear indicator destroys rotors? I'm replacing my rotors so no problems there. Are there any other problems that can arise by driving for another week?

If you work at a shop you should already know the answers to all of those questions.
If you're replacing the rotors and pads in a week you'll probably be fine. Ideally you won't want to ride around with the breaks squealing like crazy though, it's annoying and everyone will look at you like your car is a huge pile of ****.

You'll be fine for a week. As long as you don't go to an autocross or something!

Why? It's perfectly fine to bend that tab back if you are in an emergency and don't want to deal with the squealing.

I personally wouldent do it but understand your situation. Ignore all the crap from the other people on here, often times its from kids who think they know what there talking about and want to be big E-thugs cause there losers in real life.
Just make sure you do it soon is what Im trying to say here.

Re: Brake wear indicator starting to squeal! (nocturnaldragon)
The squeaker is meant to alert you that you need to change the brakes. You are down to the last 5-10% of the pad. It doesn't mean, pull over and park the vehicle until you get new brakes. But it does mean, better be easy on em and start planning on changing them.
Its also a dumb device for car idiots. The brakes start making noise and someone will just take it to the mechanic saying "my car is making this bad noise when I drive, can you take a look at it?"

Re: Brake wear indicator starting to squeal! (Marauder)
I bent my tab back on my Axis Ultimates. It started to squeal so took them out, bent the tab and all is good (ofcourse I ordered some pads online after that).
You can clearly see how much pad you have left when you take out the pad and there is more than enough pad to drive around for a good amount of time.

Re: Brake wear indicator starting to squeal!
These are the worst, non-helpful answers ever seen! Why do people just say 'go replace the pads'. He knows he need to replace the pads. Does anyone know how long you can go before changing them before you cause damage? And to say you have 50 miles before you have to change them?? And saying the metal squealer tabs that alert you that your pads are thin and need changing are causing damage? They don't cause damage. When you hear grinding, now that's doing damage. So does anyone actually know the answer? Thank you to those that were actually helpful. To the others, why even chime in without the answer??
