Default brake pad replacement, can't push piston back

i tried to replace the original oem brake pads on my 96 vtec sol last night. everything went fine until it came time to put the brake assembly back together.

i didn't loosen the master cylinder cap, although i opened up the bleed valve on the rear brake i was working on, to push the piston back in. i pushed, clamped, leveraged and did what i could to push that damn piston back so i could fit it over the new brake pads but it wouldn't budge.

since this is the first time for me i'm at a loss here, what can i do to make the piston go back in? i read you can screw it back in?

are you talking front or rear brakes? discs up front, drums in the back?

you cant use a big C-clamp and keep cranking down the clamp which slides the piston in?

Try rotating the piston a little bit with vice grips. I had the same problem on my EX fronts. I even bent a heavy duty C-Clamp thats how much it wouldn't budge. I just rotated the piston a little bit and then it compressed quite easily. I have no clue what would make it do that but that is how I fixed it. Hope that helps. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PULL THE PISTON OUT WHEN YOU ARE ROTATING THOUGH!

For the rear pistons, you have to screw them back in, they make a special tool or you can use a pair of needle nose pliers. Just stick each tip of the pliers into 2 of the groves and spin it clockwise(right). Let me know if that helps any.

Sounds to me like perhaps your caliper is frozen. You may just have to go buy a rebuilt caliper.

its not just hondas all rear disc brakes need to be rotated back in i don't recall which direction but like some previous posts said you can use pliers or the special tool from honda, (or any will do).

As far as I know you can't push it back with a clamp. If it's the same as my 93 civic si, then there is a "+" groove pattern on your piston. Use nose pliers to turn it clockwise.

If it's too tough go to autozone or auto part store and get a special "cube" socket for brake piston. It's cube shape has teeth that will go into those grooves and you turn it with 3/8" drive rachet. It will give you more torque than the nose pliers.
