Default Brake booster check valve

Will my brakes work if I don't have a check valve between the brake booster and the intake manifold?

The brake booster operates on vacuum... I would think that the check valve is there so that pressure is not fed into it... I imagine without the check valve it'll be like having manual brakes like that of a vintage car or bicycle...

well i dont have one. i drove my car for the first time today, and the brakes felt 100% normal. however. When i brought to car to a higher rpm (around 4000+) and hit the clutch to shift, the car shut off, and when it did, hitting the brakes was like pushing on a brick wall. im hoping that its because of the check valve, cuz thats a simple fix. a close friend of mine had none on his car with no problems at all. thats why i figured it would be ok. but maybe it was a bad choice.
