b20vtec smog check
hi guys
ok so i live in CA which sucks and i have a test only smog check thats due. i drive a 99 civic si with a b20vtec atm, which i know is illegal but im going to a really trashy smog station that im pretty sure i have a good chance to pass visual. my question is, what exactly do smog stations look at when checking visual besides that stamp that says b20. Also is it worth it to even try to smog it or should i just spend that time and put my b16 block back in, atm im really busy everyday so swapping a motor will be a pain.
Thanks in advance guys

California smog test should include a port scan for all OBD2 vehicles. Even if you tech overlooks the visual aspect, you'll still end up failing the ECU test, as I'm guessing that you have a chipped / modified OBD1 ECU in there.

Re: b20vtec smog check
As a person with a SMOG license, I will tell you that most cars that have a high history of being modified I check with a fine comb. So yes if the B20 it shown, then I know its not legal. Then I will perform the emission test, then plug in the OBD connection to run codes and the machine requires it for RPM pickup and code check.
Then perform the rest of the test. Which is emission and visual, so you have to have everything that emissions sticker shows inc. vacuum diagram.
So if I was you, go ahead and swap in the B16 and smog it then you do not have to worry for 2 years!!.

Re: b20vtec smog check
ok well first of all there are not too many smog techs that know what there even doing let alot know anything about hondas. Yes i have my smog license and know my **** but where i used to work there was a guy that didnt know **** about cars let alone honda. There not going to look at the Engine Code or any of that ****. take it and get it smoged the tech wont know what there are looking at is any different than what came in it. just make sure that everything is hooked up correctly and you shouldnt have a problem. and when you hook up that OBD2 connector there is nothing that is picking up the VIN number from the computer. there is now way for them to tell if its a new or rebuilt computer from a different sourse so you sould be fine.
