B20b/z with B16a2 auto transmission? Need topic moved Please!
Well this is just me doing research. I like to think I'm a good newbie, I read the stickys and searched the forums and was a bit timid to post my question after I saw the results people at hondaswap.com got. No offense and I know I'm a newbie but let me set down the rules. I really dont want to hear people's oppions on the automatics unless they are valid. I dont need some hot shot who blurts out a couple sentences that dont help me. At hondaswap.com they were rude from what I read. Some guy asked and they said were not a rice site but a technical site, another similar topic and they said were a performance site. Reason I choose to ask here is from what I read you guys are a lot more open minded and dont press your view's/oppions on people. Now to the research part
Ive never learned manual, never had a car to learn in so its all automatic. Ive read about different engines and came to the conclusion I liked the B20. I know you can stick any b-series transmission with any B engine. I dont need to worry about smog tests since I dont have to do them. I want to just be able to get up to speed fast. I dont need it for racing or show. The torque and hp is not bad on the B20z. I read about sleeve problems but I dont think that should be a problem since I dont plan on turboing or anything else that elaborate.
1.So since I'm used to the D16z6 automatic then I would reallynotice a difference with a B20z/b16a2 automatic transmission right?
2.Another question later on, just for fun could the B20 with a b16 head and the same automatic transmission work as well?
3.What would the gas mileage be on the B20?
4.How long would the engine last if it was done right. say just a B20 and the b16 auto transmission?
Well thats my questions I might come up with more later but those are what are on my mind. I did a search and found no such discussion so I dont think there are any other topics that concern this topic. I hope I dont sound too stupid, I'm currently very newbie at this stuff.
BTW a new car is out of the question
[EDIT]hmm I guess this could have gone in Tech or Hybrid forums... sorry[EDIT]

hmm I think this really belongs in Tech forums since its really a theory, so if any mod could move this to the correct forum that would be great.

yeah they are pretty rare I guess. Ive heard of using an LS B18 auto transmission ( I believe thats the one) and the B16 auto. I thought the B16 would be stronger. I found some site jdmcustoms, I probalby wouldnt get it from them but this is just for reference.

I don't get it. B16A2 is USDM and only came in 5spd while it says B16A right before it as well as JDM. Smells fishy.

As far as i know there are no b16a2 auto's, because all SI's in the states came in manual. However, there are b16 (JDM) auto transmissions. A buddy in town has one that he got from a shop down in houston, however they are pretty rare. Try contacting a large JDM importer and see what they say. The gearing on the b16 auto will be much more favorable than the b18b auto.

Jeeze that 24hour period is murder.
Judging from the confusion of the B16a2 auto transmission I guess that jdmcustoms is wrong and its just b16 automatic.. ahh well I don’t know.
Well I still think I don’t have to worry about the damn smog rules. But there is a small chance we might move, who knows when. And if we moved then it would be to where cars have to be tested. I still like the potential to the B20. But if the b20 was to not work out, then how would the B18B with the B16 automatic (yes the Japan one) work out? And again if I wanted to up the stakes a bit how would the same automatic transmission work with the B18b with vtec head? Any problems. Remember I wouldn’t be racing or taking the rpms high.

lol you are making me waste my replys
Id love to learn stick, but I would need a car to learn stick and right now there is just no time or car for that matter. The cars automatic, we are tight on money at the moment, I see no point in doing a conversion to an automatic car anyhow. Some day I will learn manual but just cant happen right now.

1. yes you would notice a difference because of the bump in torque.
2. yes the b16 head would work, but i think may need a little fabrication
3. have no clue on the gas mileage
4. how long an engine will last is VERY hard to predict.
and yes im sure there is a b16 auto tranny, just rare to find. but definately not a scam. the gearing on the b16 auto tranny would be better than a b18b. but a b18b would be a lot easier to find, and would be cheaper since ur tight on a budget.
hope this helped somehow. good luck with whatever u do

Thanks guys, yeah I may be thinking too simple. Learning manual would simplify matters so much. But anyhow, I’m just thinking simple like drop B20 in add B16 auto transmission... this swap has really to many question marks as on how the two would act together. The B20 is a high torque at low rpms engine and who knows how a auto transmission from a B16 would act with it.
I read somewhere about a mount kit that lets you keep power steering and A/C on the H22 swap, however, I went to the site and its true about P/S but didn’t see anything about the A/C. I love my A/C too much especially with black car and vinyl seat covers.

a swap isnt just plug and play, i mean i know b series are made for our cars (h22 is more money), however many people have problems after dropping the motors in. you will need extra money for miscellaneous parts/problems you may come across that u never thought of, or would be better off replacing before you dropped the motor in.
learning how to drive a manual is really NOT hard. you will be get it within hours, maybe not even that long. the only hard part to new learners is balancing the clutch with gas in first gear and going from a stop on up hills. after your used to it, you wont even think about it twice. just get a manual!

Yeah I'm more than sure your right about the manual thing. Guess its just scared of the unknown, however that hill part has always scared me, especially with people who get up real close. I think this thread has been good for my research. However currently I'm not very independent, I dont see me getting a chance to learn manual happening any time soon. Thanks ill3galdriv3r been very helpfull. btw this is my last post for the 24hour period.

trust me you will have more fun/control when driving a manual. and if your determined you WILL be able to learn. this friend of mine thats a girl bought a 2005 manual altima not knowing how to drive a stick and now can drive it perfectly fine.. not saying that girls have a harder time learning but if she can do it, you can too! plus girls that drive stick are for some reason a BIG turn on

haha im 17. i baught my 5 speed VX before i even knew how to drive stick. i drove it home with dealer plates that day. 5 stalls and 30 mins later, i was home. once i got there, i set off to learn that bitch by heart, and 30 mins later it was great! not one stall! until i got to a stop at the top of an uphill lol, u'll laught at this, i couldent catch the car fast enough and there was some1 behind me so i had to hit the hand brake, keeping a hand on it, get the car in gear and pop down the handbrake and i was rolling LOL...my first day was the best. now i can drive great, althogh, i DO still stall it sometimes when im not paying attention. say like once a month?
its fun, but if auto is your deal, auto is your deal.
i believe that looking for a B16 auto tranny is not worth your time/money and if you just want to get up to speed quickly/efficiantly etc etc, the b18b tranny will do fine and will be alot less expencive.

seriously... Took me 5 minutes to get the manual tranny down when I was 15.. If you can't do it with in 20 I'd cry.. Just get a manual.. You just won't be able to get any were untill you learn to drive it. My other question is who's doing the engine work.. I havn't met too many people who can't drive a manual and can do the work required to do this type of thing.

Call up JDM motor importer's i remember that hmotorsonline had a couple of auto b16 trannies.
But a little advice. you should learn how to drive a manual. i went to a shitty carlot in town and brought a friend. i took it to a industrial park area for about 45 mins and i got all the basics down. then bought my car and it was golden after about 2 hours of driving around.

Well, just to chime in - it'll take you a day to learn stick. Seriously, it's just not that hard. Once you get the whole mechanics down on level streets, even hills won't be a problem. Hills just require you to get the car moving as fast as possible, which of course is easy once you learn what to do.
Autos rob more power than stick, unless you're going to be dragging and intend to rebuild the tranny for rapid shifts, you're just plain better off with a stick.
If you're stuck with going with an auto, get something that was used over here. Auto trans repairs are expensive enough without having to import hard-to-find parts from Japan.

Your car would be faster by simply doing an auto to manual conversion.
