B16A EK4 Downgrading to SOHC itīs posible?
Hello Guys.
I need buy a Civic for Pure track Race preparation. ( in my country i can find JDM and USDM parts-vehicles)
The category i will participate only SOHC is allowed. i want start the modifications from a standard but factory powered vehicle, so i can:
- I can buy a EK3 with the d15b engine (is the easiest to start, but it comes with rear drums and less chances to get one with good suspension upgraded.)
D15B VTEC
Found in: 19921995 Honda Civic Vti (Japanese Market)
Displacement : 1,493 cc (91.1 cu in)
Bore and Stroke :75,0Ũ84,5 mm
Rod Length : 137 mm
Rod/Stroke : 1.62
Compression : 9.3:1
Power : 130 hp (95.4 kW, 130 PS) at 7,000 rpm
Torque: 106 Nm
V-tec switch over : 5,500 rpm
Redline : 7,500 rpm
Rev-limiter : 7,200 rpm
Valvetrain : SOHC (4 valves per cylinder)
Fuel Control : OBD-1
ECU : p08 (small case ECU)
- Buy a EK4 or EK9 (with luck) (it comes with better brakes) get advantage with the 1600cc engine high compression and DOWNGRADE from DOHC to SOHC.
JDM B16A (Second Generation)
Displacement: 1,595 cc (97.3 cu in) 1.6 liter
Compression: 10.4:1
Bore: 81.0 mm (3.2 in)
Stroke: 77.4 mm (3.0 in)
Rod Length: 134 mm (5.3 in)
Rod/stroke ratio: 1.745
Power: MT: 170 PS (125 kW; 168 bhp) @ 7,800 rpm & 16.0 kg·m (157 N·m; 116 ft·lbf) @ 7,300 rpm
VTEC engagement: 5800 rpm
Redline: 8200 rpm (AT: 7700 rpm )
Transmission: S4C/Y21/S21 (4.4 final drive, optional LSD)
ECU code: P30 (EG2/EG6/EG9)
OBD1
B16B (Type R)VTECFound in:
1997-2000 JDM Civic Type R[EK9]
Displacement: 1,595 cc (97.3 cu in)
Compression: 10.8:1
Bore: 81 mm (3.2 in)
Stroke: 77.4 mm (3.0 in)
Rod/Stroke ratio: 1.84:1
Rod Length: 142.42 mm (5.6 in)
Power: 185 PS (136 kW) @ 8200 rpm & 118 lb·ft (160 N·m) @ 7500 rpm
Redline: 8400 rpm
Rev-limit: 8900 rpm
Transmission: S80-S4C With Helical LSD (4.4 final drive, dual-synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears)
VTEC engagement @ 6200 rpm
ECU code: PCT
OBD-2A
Note: This engine uses the same block as the Integra Type R (B18CR), which is taller than the B16a block (by approx 17mm), but with a crank the same stroke as the b16a. It uses longer rods to accommodate for this, which is why the Rod/Stroke ratio is higher than a standard B16.

So, These are my posibilities. Did you know guys if a SOHC swap B16A engine will give me better results than a D15B SOHC engine? which parts i will need?
DID the SOHC downgrade loss the B16 redline? expected HP loss??
I searched lots for DOHC to SOHC mods in B16 engines, but because is a ctually a downgrade, cant find info
Obviously after that i will do Header 4-1 CAI, Hondata, Radiator, Oil cooler etc...

Ive heard of this series, but there would be no reason why you couldnt swap to it, just get the engine harness and an ecu from a obd2 vehicle of the same year and it should be pretty straight forward.

im almost a hundred percent sure it cant be done. the b and d heads are completly different so i dont think they will work together. if you want a single cam get a car that had a single cam from the factory it would be the easiest and cheapest and prolly smartest idea

No, internal and head components of either series of engine are not compatible. Not to the extend that it matters remotely for what you're trying.
Head/bottom end of h-series, b-series, d-series etc are all different. You can't mix/match major components at all.

everyone after me is correct it cannot be done the blocks are different, might as well swap the whole single stick engine in instead.

To make this simple. You should just swap in a D16y8 along with the whole Civic EX(EJ8) engine harness, direct fit. Or custom fit a R18 single cam in from the 8th gen Civic. F-series swaps seems like the best bet. Mated with a B16 tranny would seem nice.
