Autozone turned us away? Then screwed by Pepboys!
I sent my sister to autozone to get her checkengine light checked, since I here it's free there. But they said no to her year? I always here to go there for free check engine light service. Why don't they check ours?
Anyway she ended up going to pepboys that screwed her there. Add in paper said free check engine light service with repair. 19.88 otherwise. They said it didn't apply to her year and ended up charging her 89.99 for the check engine service. 253.35 total for parts and labor for replacing O2 sensor.
Whats the deal?
They also mentioned needing a new exhaust system. Does she need it? If so does she need a muffler or cat?
Please help, many questions!

just check your own codes in the future....

I would never pay money to have this done....ever... $20 is ridiculous
You got shafted big time.
No one can tell you what you 'need' without seeing anything.

oh yea its a 95 civic. The 19.88 free with service is their promotion right now in their flyers.
And she wasn't charged the 20 she was charged the $90. Why did autozone send her away anyway. I thought I saw a post where someone went there.

what kinda of car does your sister has? i think the only time you need to replace your exhaust pipes is when they get broken, punctured, or rusted beyond belief. if you would really need anything to change is your cat, because thats the only thing that tends to go first is an exhuast system. as for autozone and pepboys, you should find yourself a a friend in the mechanic world who knows alot about your car, but thats my opinion i hope this helps a bit.

I work on my own car (miata). If it was me I would of just bought a reader but since it was my sister and I don't have time to research things about her car I just referred her to a place that was known to do it for free.
More info:
The codes they pulled were 41 and 01- Primary oxygen sensor heater and Oxygen sensor #1. She need a new cat then? (This I should be able to do for her if needed)

Jerk I told you I recommended her to someone who was supposed to be free. I didn't know they wouldn't take her. I was also 40 miles away when she went to get it fixed. Do you fix and do diagnostic on all your relatives cars that you've never worked on before?
Serious note though does she need a new cat?

Re: (NMZ)
All the auto parts stores use OBDII scanners....your car is OBDI, so they couldn't scan it.
Our shop charges $75 to scan cars (our scanners are compatible with OBDI and OBDII...we have special connectors for the older cars)
If it's a code for oxygen sensors then I'd try and get away with just an oxygen sensor before I dumped money into a cat that you may not need. However, oxygen sensors CAN cause cat failure by adding too much fuel...thus overheating the cat.
EDIT: I'd avoid those stores...the people (that I've encountered) don't really know too, too much about our cars (I live in Texas...Ford and Chevy country) and the parts they sell are Taiwanese and Chinese crap
