Am I the only one who dabs oil on the stud before fastening lug nuts ?
I dab oil on the stud before fastening on the lug nuts to spec. Am I alone ? My Paps told me that it will prevent seizing or the lug "freezing" on there like cement.

not here
and the only time i have ever heard of "freezeing" is when you have a bolt and a nut and both are titanium

Oh yeah that is a good old trick yeah I do it, my dad has always done it. Nothing wrong with doing this don't let anyone tell you different.

Thats kinda interesting. It would be like when your building a engine you put oil on the thread so you get a more accurate torque reading. I would just make sure to check the torque after 30 or so miles to make sure it holds.
As far as seizing.
As long as you torque the nug nuts to spec (with a torque wrench), and rotate your tires regulary. The lugs wont have enough time to seize.
When ever I see someone with a frozen lugnut its usally because one of these
A: some clown put 300ftlbs of torque on it.
B: the tires havent been rotated in more than a year
C:sometimes people just have bad luck

never heard of this...
and i never tighten my lug nuts to the max. noting happens though. but one time front left got loosen and rims where shaking on freeway. becuz i told my younger bro to tighten it. i was too lazy that time.

Lugnuts seize, that is a fact. So why not do it?

Heard that if you do use a lubricant on your lugnuts, that it will cause them not to torque down properly and 'stretch' the studs--hence leading to failure of the studs.
Keep them clean with WD40 then wipe off, but lubing them isn't a great idea IMO.

if thats true then shouldnt a lot of high performence engines using ARP studs have their heads flying off? ARP gives u some lube with their studs and bolts so that you can get an accurate reading on torque and it doesnt affect the life of the studs at all.

I cannot stand lug nuts. After stripping 2 (and 1 of them causing me to screw up my rim) I put anti-seize lubricant on all my lug bolts and the insides of my lug nuts. Not a single problem since.

Different application, so I don't think the comparison is valid. And the wheels don't fly off--they just snap the studs off when you try to put 75ft/lbs on them.
I'm just telling you what I heard. Cleaning them with WD40 will work just fine, and I have never seen a wheelstud freeze to the lugnut.

Re: (xavior66)
Why dont' you guys use anti-seize ? Its far more clean than using a dab of oil and it's cheap.
WD40 also works great.
But no i don't see anything wrong by using oil. I used to do it all the time.

Ok, let me clarify a little bit more--just make darn sure that you do not get grease or oil on the tapered part of the lugnut. That's where you'll try to torque and you'll end up putting a lot more torque on the studs than you want to, because the grease will cause the nut to slip on the face of the wheel. Not good.

I always clean and put some kind of oil on my own bolts for my car, but for other cars i work on i don't. Seems like a nice clean lubed bolt is a happy bolt.
