Default AC isn't recharging

I went and bought freon yesterday at advanced auto in an attempt to recharge my AC and it seems like the freon doesn't want to go in the compressor. i just recently got a compressor from someone and was wondering if i have to drain anything out of the old one in order to recharge this one.

Does the compressor come on when you turn on the AC?

In order to empty the can you have to turn on the engine and the turn on AC max cool while the can is connected, when the compressor is on it will draw in the freon into the system from the connected can.

It takes about 10 minutes to empty a 12 oz can of coolant, although it was closer to 15 minutes for my system.

Have you pressure tested the system?

You can't just hook up a can without knowing the status of your system

the fan comes on when i turn the AC on. i had the engine started and ac on max then connected the can but it just seemed like it wasn't taking the freon when i hit the button. maybe i was a little impatient because i def. wasn't out there 10 minutes, and i haven't had the system pressure tested yet

Yeah it takes awhile just give it some time to empty the can, I didn't time it when I did it but it felt like at least 15minutes maybe even 20, the can will get really cold just give a little shake now and then and leave the AC on max.

Don't forget to bleed the can before you hook back up ,just let a little freon out then connect it so you don't get air into the system.

You don't wanna overcharge the system either, if you feel confident you just need a booster can then go for it.

If your AC is completley warm then you may be safe to put one can in.

Don't let the can fall on it's side ever while its connected to your AC, also I hope you didn't buy freon with "leak guard" in it ,just get the pure freon.

It will say clearly on the can if it has filler leak fix in it, don't get that stuff, just get the regular r134a

The leak fix stuff is crap avoid it at all costs

By the way what year is your car?

could be many issues Ron and a couple other guys here know allot about AC

Did it not get kool at all when you tried to fill it?

Usually it will get kool for a little while then leak out then get warm if you have a leak

Oh ok sounds like you need to go through the entire system , do a check list to make sure all is good.

Condensor, Evap, etc.

It's behind the glovebox , but like I said my experience in this area is limited you'll need consult RON he'll probably pop in here eventually

If your AC was stolen you'll need to replace all the stolen components possibly more than just the 2 lines etc.

Did you just replace the compressor and now you are trying to recharge the system?

After a compressor fails and you remove it, you must flush the system of debris, install the new compressor, add oil to the system, replace the receiver/dryer, evacuate the system, and check for leaks. Only if the system holds vacuum overnight should it be recharged with refrigerant. The vacuum also serves to pull the refrigerant into the system during recharging. There also cannot be any air in the system because air/moisture prevents the A/C from working properly.

^Would it cause idle problems if there's air in the system?

Yes, it could because air in the system would cause abnormally high pressure on the high side.

^. This may totally explain my problem b/c the idle got worse after my charge and I just hooked the can to the system and went to town...

And if it's abnormal on one pressure side that makes even more sense because the idle pulses when the A/C is on!

I really hate those "charge in a can" kits from the parts stores.

Without a set of gauges to check PRESSURES you cannot really tell what's going on.

If there truly is no leak, and the system won't accpet a charge, then there is likely a blockage somewhere. One of the easiest damaged parts, and coincidentally one of the smallest orifices (meaning clogged easily) is in the expansion valve.

The expansion valve being bad can cause high, high pressures on the high side and even vacuum on the low side.

You (the OP) should seriously consider taking the car to a professional with a nice a/c machine to have the system checked.

EDIT:

I'd never replaced a compressor without also doing a reciver drier. I strongly suggest one of those too.
