ac compressor question?

ac compressor question?
my girlfriend has a 93 civic hatchback dx. Her ac hasnt been working very good lately and today when i asked her to turn on the ac while the car was running, i looked at the compressor and everytime you accelerate the a/c clutch disengages.
IS this normal? at idle the compressor stays engaged but once you rev it it lets go?
any ideas, i searched but couldnt find any similiar?
