Default 99 Civic steering creak

Today while turning into a parking lot I noticed a very loud creak when turning the wheel either direction. I noticed if you turn the wheel fast the noise it not as loud nor does it last as long, but it’s still there. It does it even if the car is off. I don’t think it’s the ball joints, but I wondered if someone had a similar issue? It's a 99 civic ex with a ton of miles

Thanks in advance

you may want to double check the front lower ball joints. my cousins car had the same issue. he turned the wheel from lock to lock while i listened to try and narrow down the location from where the noise was coming from. sure enough, the noise was coming from one of the lower ball joints. we shot some wd40 and the noise went away. we ended up getting the ball joints replaced. problem has never came back since.

I will double check the ball joints when I have the car in the air tmw. My initial plan is to lift the car spay lube on a joint, bushing, ect lower the car and check for noise. Wash rinse repeat until I find the culprit.

when having the car up in the air, you might not be able to hear the creek due to the pressure bring removed on the ball joint, if in fact it is a ball joint issue. I would suggest with the car still on the ground, have a friend help turn the wheel back and forth so you can pinpoint the problem.

by the way. it was on a manual rack. ball joints were torn and would happen more frequent when the ball joints got wet due to rain or even a car wash.

I had a buddy come over this evening and turn the wheel while the car was in the ground to try to pin point which side it was coming from and could not replicate the sound at all. I even drove it for about 10 miles and I did not make the sound once.

So I got under the car again today and check upper lower ball joint, and every bushing I could find and everything seemed fine. I also have not heard the sound again. I wonder if a rock or something had gotten stuck some where and worked its way out.
