Default 99 Civic Headlight problem - Need correct wiring

Hello HT. My 1999 Civic Hatch has been having a headlight issue since the day I got it. Pretty much, the left and right corner lights do not turn on when the headlight switch is on the on position (whether it be the first, or second turn). Only the right turn signal works when signaling, the left does not work at all (even if emergency lights are on). Also, the headlights turn on when the headlight switch is on the 1st turn. If I remember correctly, when you first turn the headlight switch, the corner lights turn on. When you turn it to the second position, the headlights turn on aswell. I think I have the wiring all messed up. I looked at the diagram on the Haynes manual and it's confusing as ****. Anyone want to share with me what wires go where, or post a picture of their wiring? I know the wiring is messed up where the headlight socket is at. There seems to be some modification and re-routing going on there. I'll post up a picture of my wiring soon

the wiring is color coded, for the most part.

Did you just get the car? If so maybe it was in an accident in the front and the previous owner had to do some rewiring, the wrong way possibly. Check your fuses and voltage at the fuse box, Also check your headlight switch in the column. Could be bad wiring to the switch if it was in an accident with deployed airbag and all. Taillights, brake lights, hazard lights, are those working right?

I've had the car for awhile but it has been in an accident in the past (previous owner crashed into a tree). Taillights work, reverse lights work, rear turn signals works, and hazard lights works too. its just the wiring in front lighting that's an issue. The reason why I barely started addressing this problem is because the passenger side headlight is grounding somewhere causing it to turn off. I want to fix it and I might as well wire everything up the correct way

Ok, front end damage, prob a good reason for the bad wire job. Did you check the fuses in the fuse box for the headlights yet? And did you check for voltage at those fuses? I would also trace those wires and check for continuity. Check all or any splices in the wiring, give them a slight pull. if they come apart, obviously not a good sign. Resplice them properly and and see what happens. Have your lights been doing this since you owned the car or has this problem just start as of recently? Try swapping your good headlight bulb from the side that works to the side that doesn't and opposite and see if the problem still remains on the same side afterwards. If the wiring, even know it looks bad, was done properly, and you can get functunality back, then you can rewire cleanly in the same sequence. Check for a ground and clean it up. Also, do you park your car outside? Corrosion could be a big factor in the wiring due to moister. I'll take a look at my 99 later after work and check wiring colors.

I saw that too. I wonder if that's for the Corner light?

@midorigreen I haven't yet. I'm barely going start today by checking all the fuses and wires. The passenger side used to turn off and on when I would wiggle the wires around but now the light stays off. I'm going to try to wire everything right when I get home

So I switched the light bulbs around and the passenger side is still not working on low beam. This has to be a wiring issue. The colored wires on the light bulb socket (the blue plug) are red, green, and black. The colored wires on the car's harness are something like black/yellow, red/yellow, and black. Which wire goes wire?

Yikes, that looks bad.

If you're not good at wiring, my suggestion to you would be to go to a wrecking yard and look at how the Civics in there are wired up, then take some pics and go home to rewire yours. If not that, then find another Civic you can park next to and compare them side by side, then fix accordingly.

If it were me, I'd pull the wiring loom back, cut off all the connectors and start from scratch with a test light. If you wanna do it my way, it's pretty simple....

Hack off the harnesses, then go check all your fuses to make sure they're good.

Grab a test light and attach it to the + side of your battery, start poking wires and whichever ones light up are grounds, go ahead and mark those, then set aside.

Put the test light on - and go probing wires with the headlight switch in the first position. Whichever wires light up are your parking lights, mark those and set them aside.

In position 2 of the switch, go probe wires and you'll see two wires on each side that light up, the first one that lights up should already be marked as parking lights, so mark the second wire that lights up as low beam.

Flip switch to high beam, there should theoretically only be one wire left, but test it for power anyway just in case.

It's pretty much self explanatory after that.
