99 automatic civic wont go into gear
K I was driving my car last night and out of no where while I was pulling off from a light. When I was waiting for someone to tow me I put it in drive and it moved but by the time I took the tow strap off it wasn't working again?!?

Try a few ATF drain & refill cycles and then go from there. Otherwise, you should be able to pick up a replacement auto tranny for a decent price. There's much higher demand for manual trannies.

That's crazy. I guess you've got to shop around. People doing auto to manual swaps would likely let their auto transmissions go for a more reasonable price.

Ya I lookled under it and there's a bent heat shield by where the cable goes in the tranny. All it does is rev up like its stuck in nutruel.

also is the heatshield actually forcing the cable to be under pressure? like does it restrict movement? if it does remove it or bend it back and see if it helps

You can remove the transmission with the engine in. If the automatic is toast, there are used replacements or rebuilt units. Swapping to a manual is going to be several days work in a shop, after you've gathered all the parts. Trans, pedals, shifter and linkage, clutch slave, master and lines, starter, flywheel, new clutch, mounts. If you really want it like a factory 5 speed car, pcm, intake, shifter boot and gauge cluster too. Just for starters. I did it, it's very satisfying. I had another vehicle to drive while I was performing the swap. I really love the Civic with a stick shift. I think the parts for the swap totalled around $700, but I did "everything" - new clutch, slave and master, resurface flywheel, new isb for the trans, new rear main seal while I was in there, etc. Also, I didn't charge myself any labor. I got most of the stuff from a kid who was parting a car out, which was cheap, but spent a lot of the swap money on new parts.

Lack of lubrication. It doesn't matter if it's in neutral or not, you don't tow with the drive wheels on the ground. (unless it's a RWD or 4WD and you remove the drive shaft for the wheels on the ground) I've seen guys ruin perfectly good transmissions this way.

And? Distance was obviously irrelevant. Start shopping for a new transmission. Lesson learned. Who towed it? Professionals? Or you and your buddies?

I did...is it different with a standard as a automatic? Cause I've towed like 3 other Honda's that where a standard. When I towed them like that and they where fine the entire time I had them....transmission wise that is.

Towing for 1 block probably didn't screw anything up any worse than it was, but you don't have to go very far to kill a transmission that way.

Re: 99 automatic civic wont go into gear
Yeah I doubt .2 of a mile will hurt it so far it drives more than when it messed up. When it messed up no matter how many times I restarted it, all it would do is rev up. Now everytime I go out it will go till about my entrance or until I change gears. I just wanna fix it then finish paying it off so I can trade it for another standard. At least if one gear goes out you just go to the next lol

It really sounds like your tranny is kaput. From everything you've said, this was exactly what the auto tranny in my 95 sol did. The good news is that finding another probably won't cost too much. You can find good used ones for $300 or less as opposed to $1500 + for a rebuilt.
