98 civic lx/B16a swap - bouncing idle
Hey guys I've been having this problem with my b16a with the idle just bouncing up and down fast and sometimes dying. This only happens when the motor is cold, it runs perfectly fine when when it's warm and also starting starting it up when warm. It don't bounce while driving just when it's a cold start idling. If anyone might know what it can be please help any help will be appreciated(:
also I don't have any check engine lights

Re: B16a bouncing idle
Mines different mine just happens when I first start it up In the morning the rpms will be steady at 1500 then will jump to towards 3000 than drop to 500 really quick for like 15 seconds or after it goes away it idles fine back to 1500 then idle at 800 or so when warm. The rpms won't jump when I'm driving only on a cold start.
FITV, IACV, vacuum lines.
Fix those first, then come back and post your results.

Re: B16a bouncing idle
I have not cleaned the Iacv yet but will in the morning hopefully that can be it. As for air leaks I don't think I have since I checked all the lines when the cruise control plug from behind the intake manifold came off a couple months ago.

Update I just discovered a sqeaking noise coming from my distributor this morning. Also the rpms did jump also turned on like normal. Also if feels like it can be my distributor because I've had problems with my old one with the same effects but didn't think it could be this one since it's pretty new

Re: B16a bouncing idle
If the idle bounces like it does while the engine is cold, it points to an issue with your FITV. Clean it, and see if the problem persists.
If your distributor is squeaking, or squealing... I believe the bearing inside the distributor may be going bad.

Re: 98 civic lx/B16a swap - bouncing idle
If anything, it may cause a miss fire, or poor performance issues. Not a hunting idle while the engine is cold.
Plus, if you're removing the distributor to fix an oil leak, be sure to mark where the distributor was at, or you can also re-do the ignition timing.
Good luck on your hunt.

Holy ****** ****, someone report this to the mods. We got another ignorant (fill in blank) refusing to take technical advice and rolling with it.

Update cleaned out throttle body, iacv and distributor. Distributor was full of black powdery stuff also contacts were pretty burnt so I sanded the burnt off. The rpms still jump but not as crazy only a twitch now

By the way... it sounds like your distributor is beginning to fail.
