98 civic crank no start / stalling
Hi all I've had this problem with my Honda for several months now. It will randomly stall on me and then after stalling on me it will crank but not start for several minutes. Then maybe 10 or 15 minutes later (sometimes as soon as 5) it will start and I'm on my way again. It was doing it maybe 1 time in every 16 hours of driving for a while, but the last time I used it I stalled 4 times in 2 hours it was a pain.
I did take it to a mechanic at one point and he hooked up to the car computer and he said there was nothing on there, and after having the car for several hours and driving it around he couldn't get it to stall on him or crank and no start so he told me he had nothing to go on.
I'm guessing taking it in to a Honda specialist and having them test every single thing could be a bit expensive. And if money weren't an issue I'd just do that or get rid of it and get another car, but unfortunately I have like no money to spend on it right now.
So my first question obviously is does anyone have any idea what it could be?
My second question is based on the fact that several months after this began...I noticed one of my battery cables was not clamped on 100% tight. The clamp was actually a little too big for the battery post. But it was making good contact with the battery, just not snug tight. Could that have anything to do with the problem? My cousin is convinced it could have been the cause. But neither of us is a mechanic. I'm not so convinced this could be the cause because I never once lost power and the battery cable was not really that loose, it just wasn't the tightest it could be. I've since replaced the battery cable clamp. But the car is currently uninsured and on non-operational status so I am reluctant to insure it and register it just so I can drive it around and test to see if the new battery cable was the answer.
Any suggestions? thanks.

Re: 98 civic crank no start / stalling
Probably the pickup coil is dying. Not sure how Honda works but My Altima and another Nissan that I had before both had the same problem (random and sudden stall, no check engine warning). The mechanics can't find the problem and they changed many things ( fuel pomp and filter, spark plugs and cable) but the problem was still there. I finally found the problem myself when the pickup coil was really death. I had to buy a full distributor because the pickup coil was inside. It was very easy to change the distributor and I already have a car stroboscope for adjusting the timing. The distributor is pretty cheap. I bought one from scrap yard and another from Ebay.
Hope it helps

Oh and I forgot to mention the check engine light does come on when it's in the process of stalling / not starting, but then turns off once the car is working again...
