97 Civic EX Overheating...
Hey guys (and girls),
I'm new here... Not lookin to mod my dd, just lookin for good tech help... Long story short, it's overheating... Read another thread on here about a similar problem and it looks like neither one of my fans are working... Tried to purge the coolant system of air, but despite a full coolant reservoir there didn't appear to be any coolant in the radiator itself aside from a bit of residual on top of the fins once I popped the cap... I let the car sit at idle for awhile until the temp gauge started slowly climbin and steam started comin out of the radiator... Turned on the heater full blast but the fans never came on... Fuses are good... No coolant or water in the oil... (I've dealt with a blown head gasket before... No fun...) Top and bottom hoses were warm so I believe the water pump is workin... Car only heats up at idle... Once I get above 30 mph it stays at a manageable temp and runs fine... Sputters a bit once the temp redlines though... :-/ Suggestions? I.E. Good place to pick up some fans and ease of self installation... Also, how easy would checkin the thermostat be?
Thanks,
-Coop

Bleeding the cooling system may take 20-30 minutes.
1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.
2) Push/turn the dash heater lever/**** to MAX heat. Fan need not be on.
3) Follow the directions in the diagram below

Checking the thermostat isnt that hard. It take three bolts and it comes right out. I suggest waiting till the car cools because the antifreeze is very hot depending when you do it. And to check the thermostat you have to pull it apart. If it is easy then its good if there is no way that its pulling apart its bad. It happened to me. But you said the bottom hose is warm so the thermostat should be fine. If the hose was cold then you should check the thermostat. Hope this was a little help.

@strategy: Yes... Refilled the reservoir... Twice... Haven't checked it today... Don't know if the prior owner used antifreeze, 50/50, or just straight water...
@ron: Awesome... Tks for the diagram...
@JDM: Yeah, both hoses were warm...

Check your fan connectors too! It might sound crazy but mine became loose once as if someone pressed the clips on the connectors and pulled them out. Check the underhood fuse for the fan as well. And do what others have said; pull the 2 pin plug from the temperature sensor by the thermostat, and jump those 2 pins with a paper clip, turn the ignition to ON(II) and see if the fans run.

Cross your fingers for me, ladies and gentlemen, but I think the damn things fixed... Mostly... Lol Apparently the prior owners thought coolant was overrated and chose to fill their radiator with air, instead... No evidence of a leak... (Yet)
