Default 96 D16Y8 Hesitation On Acceleration, help.

My 96 ex d16y8 5 speed has been having a hesitation when you accelerate and sometimes takes slightly longer to start. Timing is spot on when checked, TPS, MAP, IAT, Coolant temp sensors all test fine. No CEL.

Cap, Rotor, Plugs new still didnt change it. Wires are Taylor 8mm spiro pro resistance was from left to right which is shortest to longest like 5.5k, 7.5k, 8k, 8.2k, 8.5k or so and visually look good also. Originally my coil was testing bad, very high resistance on secondary but still ran just crappy, then it finally failed no spark. i replace the coil and test to make sure and it tests ok. Now i have spark but yet its still hesitating like it was with the bad coil.

Idles fine and everything it just hesitates and bucks a decent bit when im accelerating. Its driving me nuts im not sure what else to check i doubt the distributor itself could do this or the ICM. ICM i believe either works or it doesnt. I also seafoamed the car to see if it would change anything and it didnt. Doubt this is a fuel problem still seems ignition related but at this point im clueless. Any help or things to check would be great.

Maybe check throttle cable for slack or binding check your throttle in the intake make sure its not binding or getting stuck

Is it hesitating or misfiring? Have you checked mechanical and ignition timing?

Yes i set the timing right on when i checked with a timing light. Pretty sure its hesitating not misfiring its not throwing any codes either.

I had the same problem on my 95 Integra, if i would punch it, the car would hesistate and then start to pull. It ended up being the distributor cause I replace the cap and rotors but it kept doing it so I bought a whole new one. If you have a friend with the same motor, i would switch distributor to see if that solves your problem.

If you know anybody with a single cam you can swap out distributors and see if it still hesitate. If it doesn't, go pick up a new one.

I believe its your distributor. It could either be a ignition or fuel issue. Maybe the fuel filter is clogged if you want to check that, it is a cheaper fix compared to the dizzy.

I have a fuel filter, fuel cap, new IAT for hell of it I'm gonna try then I'm gonna do a more thorough test of ICM after that try a fuel pressure test. Depending on how that gos I'll try a distributor being how expensive tthey are. It does look like original dizzy.

Also noticed this...not sure what the hell is going on here found these crappy connection jobs under tape and there was a bag zip tied over the sensor for some weird reason. Im gonna solder and heat shrink them i think this is the vehicle speed sensor probably nothing to do with my problem i assume.

Does your check engine light even work? Because if that sensor was unplugged it should have thrown a CEL.

Bit different option here, have you checked the voltage on the TPS? that caused sputtering for me.

Hello, I need some help. I have a 1996 Honda Civic ex (automatic) D16y8 VTEC engine. Today I had a mechanic replace distributor with a new one (not rebuilt) from an auto parts store. The mechanic did not set ignition timing after replacing. (I also have new fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, oil and transmission change).

When I went to pick up the car I test drove it. The car looses power when driving. It also shifts at high rpms. When I started the car it misfired a little. Also, a check engine light came on for a knock sensor code.

The mechanic replaced the knock sensor and I drove it again. The check engine light came back on for the knock sensor, car is still loosing power, it still misfired at least once and is still shifting at high speeds.

When I brought this to his attention he said it may be ignition timing. Now, I don't know much about cars but when researching on the web I've read it's mandatory to set ignition timing when replacing distributor.

Could the unset ignigtion timing be causing the knock sensor code as well as these other symptoms? Please help. Thanks

Yes, take it to a shop to retime it if you dont have a timing light.

Yea i checked TPS, voltage was good at idle and WOT and was smooth readings from idle to wot...might try checking again though. Not sure what else to do but try a new Distributor and or an ICM much as i hate throwing parts at ****...wish it would just throw a code or something.

To me, it definitely sounds like your distributor going out so buy one off ebay for $80 brand new with free shipping. You said the distributor looks like it hasn't been replace so that's a 17 year old dizzy and its time to replace it!

Thats really what im thinking...it just looks rough and the way it runs kinda does seem like it. Wish i could find a place to test it, i think you need like a machine to phase test it. i would go with a Cardone distributor for 140 most likely over a cheap dizzy, that just seems sketchy but idno.

I'll at least buy a cardone. Test every sensor in distributor? I thought you need a fancy tester to check out a dizzy?
