96+ d15b vtec OBDII into EG Hatch
hi guys i finally made up my mind and decided not to go LS swap but a d15b vtec swap for my 95 cx hatch and turbo later.
anyways hmotors seem to not have the 92-95 d15b vtec in stock and i believe i need an engine soon so i was thinking of buying the 96+ d15b vtec which is obd2..
what would i need to do this swap?
vtec solenoid? harness? any information would be helpful..
i live in so-cal so i can easily pick up the motor from Hmotors.. unless there is another engine supplier shop in so cal..

Re: d15b vtec into EG Hatch
The 96+ JDM D15B Vtec is the 3-Stage Vtec engine. It goes from 12 valves to 16 valves to the most aggressive oem d-series Vtec cam. But...it's a bitch to get running right AND you'll pay a pretty penny if you are doing M/T, the ecu's are very rare and usually go for $200+. The A/T ECU's are easily found though. Here's my thread on this guy:

Re: d15b vtec into EG Hatch
correct that the 96 spec's the obd2 version.
comes from the ek hatch "EK3," and with my experience sucks ***** big time.
i got mine on A/T then converted it to MT. got smoked by an obd1 d15b from a JDM eg. obd2 ECU is also ok when converted to MT, btw. just did some minor revisions on the harness (my friend's the expert on electricals).
note also that the d15b 3stage vtec has its dipstick on the right side, when facing the engine bay.
not familiar with the USDM eg hatch specs (is it carburetor or injected?) the Philippine version is a 1.2 carbureted engine, which requires a fuel tank swap. the PH12 (code of our 1.2 engine here) has a close-gear ratio transmission, making a very good upgrade for the D16 and D15non vtec version here (D16 is the VTi, PH15 is the LXi. our engine blocks are stamped PH16 and PH15).
BTT- swapping the d15b:
-change harness
-change ECU

All north american EG civics were multiport fuel injected. Btw, theres a ton of other JDM importers that still have OBD1 D15B Vtecs, (although they are getting harder to find) I'd get one of these before I bought the OBD2 version, you could also go with an OBD1 SOHC Vtec ZC (same as a D16Z6) which is actually a way better engine for boost anyway.

Re: d15b vtec into EG Hatch
Agreed get the OBD1 version, I got mine from tigerjapanese.com in Canada, slapped it in my coupe and through a turbo kit on it. Check sig for results
The reason I went with tigerjapanese instead of hmotors was the fact that I could get the complete motor and tranny for the same price that hmotors wants just for the motor, plus shipping was a little cheaper too.

Yeah i never really heard any horror stories about them but if they are true I guess I got lucky lol
I bought a SIR 1 B16 Swap from Hmotors for my old 91 Si hatch, Deffinatly a good company to work with

Re: 96+ d15b vtec OBDII into EG Hatch
the obd2 d15b 3-stage vtec came in the 96-98 Vti and the 99-00 Vi-RS. If there are others it came in, I haven't seen proof yet.

tigerJ got me my d15b in exactly 10 days. it came w/ cardboard from Japan and ended up only payin $935 for motor, trans, and shipping. took ME 20 hours w/out power tools to do the swap, and the only problem i had was the bitch pin in the linkage. faster than my boys b18a1 EF 3dr.
