Default 96 Civic - high idle

96 civic d16y8

Was fine all summer, once it got cold, boom. Cold start in the morning high idle till it warms up. At stop lights idle never drops below 1200. Cruising down the road at 55 push in the clutch idle at 1200. Checked for vacuum leaks nada, bled air out of coolant system, IACV is functioning properly. All summer long idle was around 6-700. Dunno what's up with the cold any thoughts? I could turn the idle down but if one day magic decides to happen I'd probably stall out.

Any CEL codes?

Adjust the throttle cable to have some slack. Clean the throttle body and IACV.

If your IACV,throttle cable, and tb are good. Drain, fill, and burp the cooling system . that coolant bleeder valve is a waste of time. Then do the idle re learn procedure.

No CEL, took it to Honda in march to have them replace the seat belts (which is totally free by the way) and they showed a recall on the throttle cable so they replaced it. Of course I double checked their work and it checked out. Cleaned the IACV and TB. Burped the cooling system, used my neighbors high lift jack cuz mine sucks. Anyways after all this problem went away, HOWEVER new problem. Instead of idling high when I stop at a red light light or if it's just sitting after its warm idle will drop from 700 where it should be to almost stalling out. It's like my IACV was just unplugged. Never really seen an intermittent IACV but w/e gonna buy an new one test it out and let yall know. Have a feeling I'm gonna be doing some wire chasing. Already replaced wiring harness in both doors due to those crap plugs in the doors. Assuming I might have more.

adjust your throttle cable. sometimes they tighten up in colder weather!

im having a similar problem, cars a 00 ex five speed, d16y8 head on d15b bottom end. factory ecu and ect. car was running fine in ny's winter, i left the car running to run inside came out and idle was at 2200 with code p0505 now present, cleaned and now replaced iac, no change. i put a new ect sensor in and now idle is about 1450 all times except when i hit the brakes itll rise to 1600. when i plug the hole in the TB the idle dies down. if i unplug the iac the car does a nasty surge from 1300-1600 rapidly will not drop to base idle. any ideas? i noticed my coolant resovoir was empty so i filled that up as well with engine off.

lol you would believe me if I said this, but from what it sounds is a classic wtf, really? Replace the cap for your Rad... trust me, be prepared to laugh, from what you said, I remember dealing with a friends civic whom had the same issue. I noticed when the rad hoses where collapsed when cold.

If that still doesnt work, check your high idle valve, and see if the little white plastic gromit is set to high...
