Default 96 Civic Check Engine Light code P1381

In my 96 Civic, the CEL keeps coming on. It's intermittent, hardly ever coming on in the summer but almost always coming on in the winter. The code is P1381: Cylinder Position Sensor Intermittent Interruption.

But I can't seem to get a straight answer about what this means. I've taken it to 4 techs now, and none know what to do. What do I need to replace? The ignition coil? The distributor? The alternator?

Thanks in advance!

Did you take it to the dealership, or to 4 backyard mechanics, lol?

I haven't taken it to a dealer, but I don't trust the dealer in my city.

I've taken it to 4 certified mechanics shops, including 2 Honda specialists.

Not that this matters for the answer

Thank you, dumafit. Does anyone agree that it's the crank position sensor that needs to be replaced?

The cylinder position is in the distributor, either the sensor is bad, or the wiring. Check the wiring for anything frayed, pinched, cracked or broken. If that checks out good try another distributor. The CKF, or Crank Angle sensor is located on the oil pump.

I have seen this issue in 96-00 civics and 98-00 Accords. replacing the diz doen't always fix this issue. The diodes in the alternators of theses cars tend to go bad causing unwanted interference in the system. causing a p1381. Have your alternator checked...... before you drop a dime on a new dizzy housing.
