94 EX Coupe - is distributor failing ??? did I waste my money?
My 94 EX Coupe (D16Z6 all stock, lame I know but I am working on it) has had a problem since I got it 9 months ago.
It would run perfectly for a few miles, then it would start bogging down whenever I took off from a stop, almost as if it had no fuel or spark, after a second or 2 it would just pick up and go fine.
This problem would get worse in hotter weather, winter = 50 miles of driving, summer = 15 miles of driving.
Well the other day I decided to try and get rid of some of the problem before hot summer weather hits again, I put a distibutor cap rotor button and plugs into the car.
For about 10 miles the damned thing ran better than ever before, then it suddenly started doing something very similar to the take off bog only going down the road at full speed, it would bog down and get slower the more I pressed the accelerator, then it would just kick me in the seat and go perfectly smooth for a few moments before bogging down again.
Well, while replacing the rotor button I found that the old one was stuck, also I noticed that the pickup (black box thingy that clicks when the lil cam thing comes by on the shaft? probably TDC signal) had a few fine rusty looking cracks in it.
I had to pry the old rotor off, in the process I accidently pryed on the pickup a little.
Here is what I think, the pickup was going bad causing my take-off bog after the engine got hot enough to cause it to get glitchy.
After putting it under stress prying the rotor off, the pickup now gets even worse once it gets hot.
Does any of this sound logical?
You cant buy the magnetic pickups seperately so I ordered a remnaufactured 1 yr warranty distributor from a dude on eBay for $152 shipping included.
Have I wasted my money?

They were replaced by the car lot before I got the car, they are Honda OEM and appear to be in perfect shape, I have took them off and back on before and it didnt affect the car.
I looked at all the ends when i had them off last time to make sure none were popping loose.
Also I forgot to mention, when I got the car the screw that holds the rotor on had backed out and come loose, it must have bounced around inside the distr as the rotor was missing its little fins, the screw was found lodged between the 2 wires coming out of the pickup. Perhaps it damaged something too?

i had pretty much the same problem, except mine was after my engine was totally warmed up, if i got on it even a little before about 3200, it would bog bad. my distributor and plug wires were both pretty much shot, got some on the way tho

Yep, thats the way mine did, except it got worse after I had to pry around to get the rotor off.
But really, was it or wasn't it a good idea to get a new distributor?

if it is a complete unit then good to have for that price. but you should try to check the icm and ignitor to see if it is up to spec. also check all the grounds to see if good and clean.
