94 civic automatic, trans won't shift unless i use the shift lock override. whats up?
I just finished swapping a d16 into my friends civic. It's an automatic.
The car starts up fine. When I go to take it out of park and put it in a gear, it won't go anywhere unless I use the shift lock override.
Whats up?
I checked the alignment, and it looks to be fine. I never touched it before the swap and it's the same transmission that was in the car before the swap.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

What did you use for an ECU? any chance you might have gotten a 5 speed P28? Err, i think i misread that, by shiftlock do you mean where you have to put a key in beside the automatic shifter? theres a solinoid that unlocks the shifter, you should hear it click when you depress the brake pedal, check your wiring, make sure everything is connected, the other thing is that other than the brake pedal having to be depressed the car must be at idle for the solinoid to release.

ya the spot where you put the key to unlock the shifter.
I start the car, it runs, i press the brake, try to shift, and nothing, its stuck. I have to put the key in to shift it.
As far as I know, it worked before I did the swap.

could be that the lock solinoid might have just gone bad..... youd need to pull the console trim panel off and check the wires on the lock thing to ensure its geting a signal when you press the brake pedal with it in park....
and a quick thing is check to ensure your brake lights work. could also be the brake light sensor busted as well.... if thats busted it wont send it a signal to unlock the solinoid. just an idea....

the brake lights do not work.
so what should be the things I check for?

Re: (94EG8)
yep he got it right.... check all the fuses first and then if they are all good under the dash and under the hood then replace the brake pedal switch.......
the brake pedal switch is +wire going in and when brake pedal is pressed it will have the +power going out the other wire....

alright so i found out it was the HORN/brake light fuse under the dash. So I replaced it and as soon as i put the brakes on, it blows. It is a 20A fuse so I put a 30A fuse in it for now and everything works fine. Shifter too.
But what would cause it to blow with a 20A fuse?

Re: (92integraVTECgsr)
No idea why its doing that, but i had a mysterious problem where the horn/brake light fuse under the hood kept blowing. In the end i replaced a burned out tailight bulb and its never blown again. It was very random though, it went a few hours once and then i tried to replace the fuse and as soon as i started to put the fuse in it blew. i can only assume the the tailight bulb i replaced managed to short internally. hope that helps.

Re: (94EG8)
i highly advice against just puting in a larger fuse... the stock wires where not designed for the extra power! your wires could start melting from the fuse box all the way to the short! shorting out every other wire that it touches!
i had big problems with my old towncar with puting in a fuse rated another 10 and it melted the wire from the fuse box to the fuel pump which also shorted out my fuel gauge and eventualy started blowing fuses again!

Re: (94EG8)
i should also add...... if it blows the fuse when you press the brake pedal. go unplug all 4 rear taillight wire conectors and see if the fuse blows still..... if it does id replace the brake relay. but if the fuse doesnt blow then plug one taillight in at a time and test to see if the fuse blows. then take the bulbs out and replace them.... the contacts on the bulb could be worn down and shorting the 2 contacts.
just track down the REAL PROBLEM!!!!! before it becomes a true problem...

Re: (92integraVTECgsr)
id still say get the ca rback and find the actual problem. if its a true friend then tell him the dangers of just poping in a larger fuse!
you definatly dont want the wire to s hort out along other wires and create other large problems which can create some real problems with friends!!!!!!
at the least write up a simple paper note saying you replaced the stock fuse with a higher fuse rating as requested from the dad and have the kid and the dad as well as you sign it. that way he cannt try and take you to court if some serious problems do pop up in time.
you can trust him all you want but if problems pop up they will be first to blame you and start some drama none the less!!!!!!!
cover your own @ss!!!!!!!!!!!! better safe than sorry!
i would still fix the problem tho if its your true friend! a few things to also check is ask if anythings been changed on the interior lately... like amplifier wires, stereo wires. new taillights/headlights, or even interior trim panel removal as well since he could have pulled a panel and when reinstaling the panel the wire got caught between the clip which shorting out the wire.
and if he hasnt done anything, then go to your local honda dealership and see if the car has any kind of brake/horn relay under the dash that you could replace.... its always posible that relay could be going bad shorting out internaly.

Not a friend. Just a guy in the neighborhood. He is a cheap bastard. Hasn't even paid me for the swap I did that is up and running. Gave me a check last week, it bounced, then he said oh he didn't have any money in his account. He is a cheap, stupid idiot that thinks he knows everything. His idea to put the fuse in, his problem. I did the swap and its running fine. If he was nice and paid me on time and the amount I wanted, then I would take care of everything. But to do a full engine swap for $250, and then be a cheap *** and not pay me after 2 months, screw him. He's constantly calling me and asking when I'm going to finish the car. It's a never ending story. He is one of those guys you don't want their money because its a headache dealing with him. I did my part, now he should pay me. Just because his son f*cked the brake wiring up, that's a different job and needs to pay me more for that.
