Default 93 del sol - sometimes starts then dies immediantely, what's the problem?

Hi,

My del sol sometimes dies immediately right after I start it, but then I take the key out, wait a minute or two, try again and it'll start up fine. Sometimes it takes a couple tries. After it dies the first time, I'll try to start it and I can just hear the starter going, but it won't fire up. After a few tries it'll usually start up. But this has been happening more frequently, it started last month maybe once a week, but then it happened twice today. Once it starts up the car drives fine, it hasn't died while I'm driving. I feel like eventually the car won't start at all.

Any ideas?

It's a 93 del sol s (d15b7) all stock 5 spd manual.
no CEL btw.

When it stalls, do the cluster warning lights turn on?

No, all the cluster lights stay off

Test the ignition switch.

Read the link Hero posted. Just resolder it.

Okay Thanks! Gotta borrow a smaller ratchet from my buddy, the relay is way back there next to the clutch pedal, then I'll pull the relay tomorrow and check.

The fact that your cluster warning lights are off when the engine stalls points to a bad ignition switch. Make it a high priority to test the ignition switch -- see FAQs sticky.

If I have a bad ignition switch does that mean the main relay wouldn't get any power at all?

Or it won't click the 3rd time when you turn the key to START after the fuel pump primes and check engine light turns off?

I'm trying to test the main relay just by feeling the clicks right now until I can pull it out and check the terminals tomorrow

Sorry if these are noob questions, I'm not good with electrical stuff.

This^ alone is sufficient to warrant testing the ignition switch.

Check the ground wire from the motor to the body and the body to the battary.... Its a stupid thought i no but i had exact same problem. First time the fuse blew for the ecu, wouldnt start... , after that i had the exact same issue, and turns out one of the two ground wires were not getting a good conection. And then
It finnaly stoped turning on periode. .. Once i replaced thos i never had that problem. Drove me nuts for the longest time every time i would check fuses , disconect battary . So on. Then it just stoped all together wouldnt start at all. I found out by holdig a wire from the engine to the negative on the battary , and it fired right up, .

When I had this problem, it turned out to be the ICM (Ignition Control Module) in the distributor. Cost me $50 bucks at Autozone. Remove the distributor, and it's pretty easy to replace. Make sure to plug the hole in the side of the cylinder head, though, or you'll lose a good bit of oil.
