93 Civic Speedometer Problems
I'm currently having an issue with getting my speedometer to work, everything on my car is stock as far as things that could cause this to not be working.
Speedometer and odometer aren't working 100% of the time, when it works it works like it should, and when it doesn't the speedometer sits at 0 and the odometer doesn't roll. Also all the other meters in the gauge cluster work except my fuel gauge which is a separate unrelated problem.
So far I have removed the meter cluster and have re-soldered all the joints to eliminate the possibility of a cold solder joint, and I have cleaned all the connectors to make sure they have good connections. I cleaned the vehicle speed sensor as well and cleaned the connector on it. The cruise control works which makes me think it isn't the vss but it's also hesitant about kicking in as if it has to take a few seconds to read a speed to set the cruise to. After it does set it doesn't set to the speed I set it to, instead it sets to about 5mph under what I set it at.
This morning my speedometer started working and in light of trying to troubleshoot the problem better I dropped a gear and accelerated as fast as I could and instead of the speedometer continuing to work as it was it just fell back to 0mph dead. Is it possibly that the vss can't read speeds fast enough to run the speedometer?
My question is that I'm not sure what the faulty component is. I'm more likely to believe it is the vss since it is exposed to road salts and everything else, and I don't think its faulty electrical components in the meter because transistors rarely go bad (the capacitors are the first to go bad), and then its in high humidity and when it rains that they act up because of the moisture in the air and even then it still works some of the time. I'm not sure however if the vss can go partly bad or not, and that's what I'm most curious to find out before I spend 80 dollars on a new one just to find out that I also need to spend 250 dollars on the meter assembly as well.
Any educated advice would be helpful.
