5 lug conversion: How do I get ABS?
I just noticed that all Integra Type R's come with ABS. Well, then how come most of the non-ABS Civics that are getting the ITR 5 lug brake conversion don't get converted to ABS? I would be interested doing an ITR ABS conversion along with my ITR 5 lug conversion. I haven't seen anybody do an ABS conversion on their Civic. Is it not possible or extremely costly? What would I need in addition to the parts already needed for the 5 lug conversion to do an ABS conversion?

From my understanding..its is very very very hard to convert a non-abs car to abs. Its going to be alot easier to buy a civic with ABS and then covert to 5lug. Most people convert to the ITR 5lug which didnt have abs.

So why is it hard? In a 5 lug conversion, I'm pretty much switching my brakes for those of the ITR. Since all USDM ITR's come with ABS, couldn't the additional stuff needed for the ABS system be transfered to my car along with the brakes?

its not just in the brakes itself. i think the solid brake lines have to be re-ran to the ABS thinga majigy from your master cylinder. its a whole mess.. i wouldnt do it....

I would like to know this as well. When I have asked I have received similar replies. In essence no one knows. I need an integra type r Helms to see the removal/service process for ABS. I think it would be cool.
I hear the ITRs come with a different ABS system than the GSRs as well.

I saw an eg hatch at a car show in Canada that had the ABS system installed in it. I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner but his car was sweet.

The ABS system requires alot of stuff. First, you need the ABS ECU. Then you need the ABS fuse box that holds all of the relays and fuses for the ABS. Then you need the wiring harnesses for ABS. Then you will need the ABS modulator and accumulator. Then you will need all of the ABS hydraulic lines. You will need an ABS brake master cylinder (yes,it's different). Then you will need all four wheel speed sensors. And you will need ABS axles for the speed sensors to read.(there are little gears on the outer c.v. joints). Then you will also need the gears on the rear hubs for the rear wheel speed sensors. That is all I can think of off of the top of my head, but there is more, I am sure. If you have all kinds of time and money, have at it.

It's one of those things that would be nice to have, but personally, I would rather spend the money on "GO FAST" parts. If you're doing the 5-lug, you won't have any problems with the "go slow" part of the equation. I have one, without ABS, and I love it.

I have ABS on my EG Civic (actually EH3) and it's nothing special. Sure it's no slide hard braking, but if you know how to brake you'll be fine.

not that tough IF you get the right parts, and there are a lot of them to do ABS right.
I am sure you can get the parts needed... most people dont want the added weight or sogginess of an ABS setup.

Some Sis came with ABS. Not all of them did though.
Go real fast, and then slam on your brakes as hard as you possibly can, if you feel the brakes let up and come on again a few times, you probably have ABS or f*cked up brakes.

Re: 5 lug conversion: How do I get ABS? (b19coupe)
Sorry to revive an old post but this doesn't really answer my question. What if my car (99 SiR with ABS) has ABS and the 5-lug swap I have (from a 2001 ITR) has the ABS sensors on it, do they just plug in? Are the connectors in the same spots on both cars or do I have to keep my original sensors? Any help and experience with this specific swap would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I believe all the plugs should be the same (probably Orange plugs) and all the lines should as well. Just make sure you use ABS axles and it SHOULD work. No promises.

Thanks. I just didn't wanna get in there, have both suspensions apart, realize that I have to swap wheel sensors, find out they're seized and break them, and realize I'd have to spend more on what was supposed to be a good deal. Paranoid you say? Thanks for your help!

Re: 5 lug conversion: How do I get ABS? (EricUSC)
It can be done but its not easy and its not for the mechanical novice. What you will need to do is replace all the hard lines under the hood. You can re-use the rear lines but you will have to re-bend the lines at the union between the front and rear lines. Use the connector from a 92-95 EX with ABS (replaces the prop valve). You will also need to replace the master cylinder and brake booster.
With a little modification the ABS unit can be mounted in the right fender area where the stock air box goes.
The tricky part is the wiring. If you can get the COMPLETE wiring harness from a wreaked Type R you can seperate out the ABS specific wiring and install it into the civic. There are five connection points to rest of the cars wiring. You will need a Helms manual for BOTH the civic and the Type R to be able to figure it out. You will also need to replace the civic cluster with a GSR or Type R cluster from the same year as the ABS unit.
Is it worth it? That's a matter of opinion. The 2001 and up Type R ABS system is outstanding. its a 4 wheel independent system that is designed for track use. Its not like any of the other 'lesser' Honda ABS systems (which are also excelent)
Yes, I have done this swap on my EG and I think it was worth it but it wasn't easy. Also. Its will be nearly to impossible to install the front brake lines with the engine in the car. (just FYI)
e-mail me if you want to discuss this.
P.S. B18C1guy, your sig. is hands down the funniest thing I have read on here in a long time

92 - Not offered
93 - optional
94 - optional - some came with it
95 - optional - more than some came with it.
I have been looking for a non moded or slightly moded (I/H/E) 5th gen hatch with ABS to use as a daily driver so I can have more fun with the one I have now.

Re: 5 lug conversion: How do I get ABS?
Sorry for digging up an old thread but this is probably the best one that I can find with search function(FAQ didn't work for me).....
Friend of mine who's got a Cdn spec 99-00 EM1 SiR coupe(w/ABS) is looking into buying my bro's 5lug conversion which is installed on a Cdn spec 99 DX h/b(w/out ABS). As far as I know it runs 36mm axle which is from JDM ITR.
We can't remember if the 5lugs setup is supposed to be on an ITR w/ABS so if my friend wanna keep his ABS on his EM1 SiR, he got to:
1. Swap his SiR's wheel sensor over the the 5lugs?
2. Can he reuse his stock SiR axle? Or gotta use the axle that my bro is using now?
What else he need to do or check for in order to swap the 5lugs over & keep the ABS on his EM1 SiR?
Thanks in advance!
