Icon2 1999 Civic heater blows cold air.

I've had quite the problem with my Civic.

Initially the heater didn't work. I posted on another Honda forum and everyone asked the same questions over and over again and it didn't really help. I am very frustrated with my car. I'm ready to sell it and buy a Toyota. I love my little civic but not when it's causing problems for me.

The heater didn't work when I bought it in 2011. I lived in Phoenix and no heater wasn't really a big deal. I moved to Tennessee and now I need heat. My father is a mechanic and we replaced the thermostat a few days after I got the car, it did not fix the problem. But it was September then and I wasn't worried about it.

Yesterday I checked the heater valve and it is working and the cable is hooked up to it. I flushed the heater core. A bunch of brown crud came out of it.

Today I took the lower halves of the dash off and looked around the switch operates the door from hot to cold and vice versa. It only blows cold air. My father in law poked his hand behind a black box. The best way I can describe it is with the center part of the lower dash off, in front of the shifter where the cigarette lighter is, there is a black box by the firewall, it gets really hot. I don't know what it is or was, but I believe he said it was the heater core. But I don't know.

Today we decided to try and flush the heater core one more time and flush the radiator. Now my car is overheating and I don't have any heat.

Last night my fiance took it for a drive after we got it all back together and he said the heater got hot and he turned it to cold and back to hot and it didn't get hot again.

It's a 1999 Civic 1.6L 4cyl. I don't know what model it is as it has no badges indicating "cx" "ex" "dx" or "lx" etc. It's got power windows and door locks, A/C, power steering etc.

you need to bleed your coolant system...thats the reason its overheating, perhaps why you have no heat

say thanks to RonJ...its his pic

The 99 Civic engine lacks the bleed bolt. Otherwise, the procedure is the same.

Also check whether the air mix door inside the heater unit fails to open.

The doors work fine.

We reflushed the heater core last night and the radiator. we bled the coolant system and it stopped over heating.

The heat works now.

Sounds like the engine has been run on tap water rather than 50:50 coolant.

It may have been but we put a 50:50 coolant mixture in it. I know the people took it to the dealership for service for everything.

I think that the problem has been my heater core. We flushed it again and the radiator and it's working now.
