Re: 1999 Civic DX Hatch Build/Rebuild Thread
Thanks for the positive comments! Been a busy week getting in a little time here and there getting this thing back together. Only complaint I have with the Power Stop kit so far is the rear rotors. They are 10mm thick and from the research ive done stock is 9mm. So I have some minor rubbing on the caliper bracket on the inside. So the should work fine after some minor machining!
While I was attempting to install my compensator arms I ran into some more trouble! The nut on the inside of the arm that is closed in by sheet metal has fallen in. Not the best explanation but hoping you guys know what I'm talking about! Now my plan is to cut a nice circle into my fresh undercoating, fix the nut, weld, and re-undercoat. Without swapping over my SiR knuckles Im having to run my DX rotors for the time being. Hoping to swap everything over when I have the proper control arms and can do the sway bars all in one go.
Aside from all that it was a pretty unproductive week. Front brakes and lines installed, rears partially installed with e-brakes cables run (yes, I even sand blasted and painted those little pins) ... thats all for now!

i know that problem with that nut...that is THE WOOORSSSTTTT lol. i had to cut it open the same way you did. my friend also did the same thing but he never welded his shut. he did it from the inside under the back seat. and covered it with carpet when he was done lol. nice set up.

Attempting to tackle that elusive compensator arm nut hidden behind sheet metal. It was actually quite painful to cut into the fresh undercoating. Mainly because it looked so clean before but also with my face unprotected, small hot shards of metal flew right at me! The whole process went painless otherwise. Hole cut quickly. Nut went back easily. (It must have come loose from a small bend in the metal you can see in the pictures) All the bolts went in easily. But I will have to get it into my shop to weld back closed on a later date as its just been in my personal garage this whole time.

Re: 1999 Civic DX Hatch Build/Rebuild Thread
Brakes bled this week with pads and everything installed. Still needing to pick up a few codder pins for the e-brake cables and other odds and ends. I decided to put my Acura EL gauge cluster in too. In the end I wanted to keep my old odometer as the EL cluster had 70 000 km more on it so I decided to just swap the faces. All went smoothly until I snapped the needles off the fuel/temp gauge off both clusters! Looking back on it now I really should have just changed over the whole tach and fuel/temp assembly and just swapped the odometer face. So I guess I'm now on the hunt for a new cluster to steal that part of the gauge out of! There was also a small blemish you can see on the tach from what looks like an air bubble so this is a good time to replace that too! Got the 2/3 of the cluster installed + working only to find a shinny new check engine light! It was late and at the end of all that I wasn't up for getting the wheels put on. So a test drive never happened! But hopefully later in the day ill get some pics of that.

Are the speedometer and tach needles accurate after you replaced them? I took mine off a while back ago to remove the indeglo backs the previous owner put on the cluster and when I put them back they weren't accurate anymore, I had to replace the whole cluster.

Actually I am but never seem to remember to mention it! I have an old set of MOMOs I need to pick up rails for.

Just a small update today. Decided to swap over the SiR knuckles to put the larger rotors on the front. Test fit the RPF1s with the brake set up just to see for clearance. Put my stock wheels on to pull it out of the garage to do some spring cleaning after the long winter I had in there! Aside from all that its very obvious I need to do an alignment before I start driving this thing regularly!
Heres how she sits! Still need to adjust the coil overs and the 2x4 of wood is just a precaution! E-brake is working fine so far!

Well it has been just over a month since my last post. Not to say nothing has happened with the car, just been too busy to post. Since last month I have mounted my front lip. After a week of driving with it I have managed to rip it off! For those of you thinking I just had double sided tape by looking at the pictures. I had it screwed in aswell. Ordered and installed a lower O2 sensor. Fixed up my check engine light quick and easy! Had to replace my gauge cluster as my speedo and tach needles kept getting loose. Over a couple weeks they would get more and more sluggish like they were slipping to the point where they were completely inaccurate. Had a new cluster picked up from the wrecker but regretfully was automatic. Been thinking about putting in an Integra cluster. Any thoughts or opinions? I also decided to replace the brake master to tighten up my brake system. Stock one was getting soft even after a bleed. I upgraded to a brand new 7/8" master to replace my 13/15". Feels a lot nicer! I've also painted my eBay grill to match the car. Im not super thrilled on the fitment but it will do the job for now. I also started repairing my stock grill as it was cracked when I bought it. I decided to cut out the centre and am planning to sand and paint the whole thing. Maybe it will turn out? maybe not? Just something fun to see how it looks! Hopefully after this weekend my tires should be mounted and I can get my rims on the car! Next autoX of the season out here is July 15th so I hope to stretch her legs a bit and see if she runs any better than last year!
Plans for the rest of the summer:
Plans for the rest of the summer:
- Get a decent alignment
- Fix hole cut in rear left side for compensator bolt
- Design and make rear subframe brace for rear sway bar
- Find and install proper lower front control arms
- Mount front and rear sway bars
- Make seat rails for Momo seats

A few days ago I got my rims back with my tires mounted. I have to give major kudos to the local tire shop for the perfect balance job! Just snapped a few pics of what the car looks like now. Thinking of maybe lowering it some more and possibly rolling the fenders. I don't plan on totally slamming this car and in no way do I want to take away from its functionality.

danteisme that looks pretty cool. I will have to look into that as an option. Would definitely save me a lot of time welding and undercoating.
Been working to fix my front grill in my down time. I epoxied the outter housing together in the back to help it hold its form and sanded down the rough edges. Fillered up the areas I couldn't get smooth. Then I ended up bolting it into the main part of the grill (part that bolts to bumper/chassis) to sand filler. Quick shot of primer, paint, and clear and its "done". I have yet to finish the main black part of the grill but should give you a pretty good idea of what I want it to look like.

Took her out with the new set up to autoX yesterday. Was a vast improvement from the first time I took it out completely stock. The Skunk2 coilovers on their firmest setting were a little too much and actually have to soften them up on my second and third runs. I felt pretty good by the end of the night with slightly faster lap times than some pretty cool cars like an S15 Silvia, FR-S, AW11 MR2, and a WRX. I put some extra pictures from the event. And before anyone asks, I live in Canada so cars like the Silvia and '99 spec FD Rx-7 are completely legal to import!

When you redid the under coating with the new rubberized undercoating. Did you wash it or scrape off the old stuff or lay it right over the old stuff? Did you at least wash all of the dirt and stuff out first?
Just curious because I plan on doing this myself.

I pressure washed it, scrubbed it with a plastic bristlled brush and methyl hydrate, scuffed the paint/clear with a green scuffy pad, rust primer, and then undercoated. For any rust areas I cleaned up with a wire wheel on a drill and then primed.
