Re: 1996 civic hx restoration
This is it, I've been looking for slipstreams or si wheels but I plan to leave the car at stock ride height.
I have a 98 z28 for my speed itch but this civic has taken over currently as my baby
I would like tint, Maybe some vti bumpers eventually
I also added a small volt meter to measure secondary 02 sensor readings for lean burn
It is very hard to find them in good condition anymore, the people who own them bought them cheap and when things break they end up in a yunk yard.
I like to try and keep it simple and just small things for comfort and enjoy the manual transmission and great ride and cushy suspension

Re: 1996 civic hx restoration
Alright page 2, this was my first hx. I sold it very quickly a few years ago when gas prices were high
Here is a recap of my last civic build. I sold it when I happened across a very low mileage 2011 ford fusion sel for $8900
Here is a recap of my last civic build. I sold it when I happened across a very low mileage 2011 ford fusion sel for $8900
I started off searching for a civic for a daily driver for about 3-4 months, my criteria was the car needed to have ac ps and be a manual 92-00 civic coupe or hatch for under $3k. I was very strict about no quarter panel damage or major dents. My truck was getting terrible gas mileage and the camaro is reserved for track duty, and my formula is the curse of the devil on my life
Use my thread to help you decide what you want to buy in a car. There is some real junk out there right now
I saw many clapped out vehicles, busted up repo cars, dented up kids cars, to neglected beaters but nothing was clean enough.
I happened to find my car about a month ago. The owner was very straight forward and a nice kid who was moving back to Colorado.
The car was immaculate inside but too perfect outside. The perfect condition paint on the front was a sure indicator that it had been in a front end collision, in this case it was a plus. The paint was immaculate and all panels lined up. Since it was wrecked I was able to settle on a fair price. Previous owner wasn't sure what happened to the original wheels but I was sure I could find some
Went home and inspected the repaired front end and all was as I thought, replaced correctly
Well I did find an issue, the motor mount was gone at 185k. The timing belt is in good shape and the plugs needed to be replaced but maintenance wise I was good to go
Good to go
Soo I was off. The first thing I wanted was a set of fog lights and a lip since they are easy to find. I ordered off of ama...com. I got the parts and they fit well, but the fog lights were terrible
As you can see, if you ever order a set of these fake fogs be warned you need to seal them around where the housing and the glass section meet the bracket
I also ordered a set of window visors. Very happy with them, fit and finish was great for $30
The major issue with every civic I found was paint clarity. With a thin clear coat on them the reflection of these vehicles get very hazy. I spent about 6 hours wet sanding the car and hitting it with me guitars m205 and a rotary buffer with a mixture of soft foam pads. I know it seems redundant on a silver car and the picture is kind of over exposed but the clarity in the reflection is immaculate now
I also happened to come across a set of hx wheels on Craigslist. Very happy with them, getting an extra 2-3 mpg highway from them
And now I am searching for a 96-98 civic ex radio/cd player to put keyless entry back into my car
The car also needs a new windshield wiper motor, but I am having a tough time shelling out $80 to get the min setting on the wipers fully functional again
I know it is not much of a thread yet but I love documenting my vehicles and I am extremely pleased with my civic.

I think that height would be fine with some 15s/16s or maybe a little drop (all dependent on you). Your previous HX was also nice. Kudos to you for getting lucky twice

Re: 1996 civic hx restoration
Really nice to see a well taken care of civic. I have a 00 ex coupe as my commuter. It is my first civic and after I drove it sixth months ago or so I decided I liked it so much that i would keep it for a long time. I am less sensitive to fuel economy and thus don't care about weight so I added sound deadening and power seats from a Acura cls. I also added an after market radio and speakers. The point I wanted to make here is my keyless entry still works. Not sure if that has anything to do with your early 6gen build but it seemed worth mentioning because of your post about your keyless entry woes.
That being said really nice car. Have you looked into getting the passenger door ding pulled? It might be a pretty cheap pointless deny removal job? I don't know. Also how have your eBay headlights held up? Did u reseal them? Wit wheels I figured I'd confirm 15's and 16's fit stock ride heights no problem depending on offset. From what I understand for fuel economy the narrower the wheel the better because less surface area equals less friction but I never tested that. Anyway enough from me. Nice car way to go!

Re: 1996 civic hx restoration
Thank you sir
The headlights and fog lights I got off of amazon for $86 shipped for both. They did not hold up very well even though I put silicon around them out of the box.
I used a heat gun to remove the clear housings and removed the reflectors and then re sealed everything back up with some 3m sealant/adhesive. Now going on 4 months no fog. Very happy with them.
The keyless entry works flawlessly now. I had to trouble shoot the wiring going to the door lock control module, it was only getting 10.5 volts and the connector inside the door frame was cracked.
I also replaced the factory antenna, was a bit of a pain.
The springs are Tein S-tech, I am very happy with the ride height and the drive ability. Car can still clear most curbs without damage, no scraping or bottoming out, and rides very similar to stock.
I picked up another daily driver/project car a couple months ago. I was planning to sell the civic, but it's just been a perfect car and I can't bring myself to sell it. Dsm should be use to sitting anyways

Re: 1996 civic hx restoration
Sold the hx last week for $3k which is double what I bought her for. Sold her to a guy who really likes car just doesn't know much about working on them. For $3k he got a solid car that should give him years of reliable service
