Icon2 00 civic si CHECK ENGINE LIGHT(HELP!!!)

hello everyone,

So i just bought it about 3 weeks ago, and the light wasnt on and it came on while i was going speed limit on the freeway.

took it back to the dealership and they changed the oil and the light turned off. but two days later i was on the freeway and it turned on again.

Because of the light going off after the oil change can anyone roughly determine whats the cause of the light?

there is also aftermarket exhaust on the car but thats it. car has 117,000 miles on it and i think the dealer put 5w30 in there. i just bought royal purple 10w30 to put in it do you think that the light will turn off after i get it changed to that; basically i need some guidence first car i ever bought with my own money and the engine light is scaring the crap outa me.

i would really appreciate your input and recomendations!

thanks guys

I have never heard of someone believing that if they add royal purple oil to the motor that it would make a check engine light go away...

If 5w30 is recommended....why did you buy 10w30? Makes no sense

Get the cel code and go from there....oil has nothing to do with it

First off, welcome to H-T.

Secondly, Here is a link to the FAQ
You may want to read through a few of those aricles, specifically this one, which is a how-to in pulling Check Engine Lights (It's more than just an annoying orange light!!)

Once you've read the article and pulled your CEL and cross referenced it with a list of the CEL codes at the bottom of a couple of the posts in this faq, I'm sure people will be inclined to help.

Thirdly, the obligatory; Search before ya post.

Like everyone else mentioned, check the code! If your cars running fine (which I assume it is) then it could be p0420, the catalytic converter issue. This happens to me all the time actually, and it's always during freeway driving. I'll clear the code, and a couple days later it'll come creeping back. Oh well, passed smog so don't care, lol.

Again, pull the code and go from there!

thanks guys big help.....

for the record i just said royal purple because thats what i purchased it was weight of the oil that i was asking about. the reason why i got 10w30 is because thats what everyone at Oreillys recommended for my mileage (117k). question- why would they recommend it?

but i had a feeling that maybe 10w30 wasnt the correct weight.

thanks guys you all are very welcoming.

i've heard people recommend 10w-30 over 5w-30 for the hotter months...i honestly just use 5w-30 year round since that's what the manual recommends. and royal purple isn't worth the money fyi.

next time the code pops up, take the car to autozone or something and have them to get the code for you.

A lot of people say to use "thicker" oil for higher mileage motors to prevent it from burning or leaking. That's called bandaging a gaping wound, and is generally not a good idea. If you aren't burning or leaking, stick with 5W30. If you are burning or leaking, fix the problem. Also, 11xK on a Honda motor is FAR from high mileage. That sucker's just getting broken in

You need to pull that code and fix the problem before it devolves into a bigger (and more expensive) problem. The CEL probably went off when they did the oil change because they reset it.

It a Honda B series run 5w30 and no changing your oil will not fix the CEL. They cleared the code when they changed your oil. Get the code pulled and report back.

no dealership should just clear a code without telling you what it is, at least thats what we do, we wont clear it unless we tell you and you say its okay to do. usually they would tell you so they can make money. people put 10w30 in cars so it doesnt burn as much oil " band-aid". most likley a 02 sensor

Unfortunately in California, you can no longer "borrow" a code reader from AutoZone etc. The state won't allow it. However, take it to Pep Boys they will pull the code for free.

You don't even need a code reader. Check the FAQ's sticky. There's a how-to. All you'll need is a paperclip.

I also recommend never buying that royal purple Junk *** oil .... that purple dye does not make it special or better then any other symthetic blend. I personally have had friends spin bearings and throw rods while using it... running 10w-30 is not going to hurt anything I don't understand why everyone is making a big deal over it..

10w30 is fine but the motor is engineered to run 5w30, it says it right on the oil cap and in the owners manual so that is what I always run. I have used just about every type of synthetic oil out there in my cars and I have never found 1 to be any better than another. Right now I run Pennzoil full synthetic because that is the brand oil my company switched to about a year ago. Before that it was Quaker State and before that I was religiously use Mobile1. I have also used Redline, Royal Purple, Castrol full synthetic, Valvoline all worked fine and caused no issues and no one was any better than another despite the large price differences.
