Default '00 Civic HX -- Check engine light ---> P1162 code

Hey everyone -- NOOB here, just registered....

2000 Civic HX w/ ~85000 miles. Bone stock, with K&N airbox filter

Got a Check Engine Light and I pulled the code at AutoZone --

"P1162 Air/Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor (Sensor 1) Slow Response"

It appears to be some time of O2 sensor type issue...

1. What should I check first?
2. Do I need to know anything different since this is an HX and I think they use a OEUGO (sp?) / Wideband sensor?
3. How much for a new sensor?
4. How hard is it to replace?
5. Any issues in not fixing it ASAP?

Thanks in advance.

4. How hard is it to replace? easy, just like an O2
5. Any issues in not fixing it ASAP? could and will affect mileage and possibly performance. Goes into a failsafe mode and runs a predetermined program. also, can't take emissions test with light on.

Thanks in advance.</TD></TR></TABLE>

O2 sensors don't last forever - narrow or wideband. 75-90k is a typical service life for them when used in a stock enviroment. Burning oil, coolant and running rich only serve to decrease the useable service life.

Go to slhondaparts.com and look up what the sensor would cost you. You certainly don't want to go to the local dealer to buy this item.

Jack up your car and get under it. This O2 sensor is the first O2 sensor in the exhaust stream. Once located, like Pazzio1 said, just remove and re-install. And like he also said, it will effect mileage and running condition. The ECU uses the O2 sensor for fuel control.

Thanks! I will get under it and swap it out, and hope for the best...

I called the place you mentioned -- they said I can buy the OEM sensor for ~$365 (!)... for some reason, the manual transmission sensor is $365, but the automatic is only $85... why is that?

Another shop said I could buy a universal sensor for my manual for $72, but I'd have to wire it myself, to the existing plug... He said that would be somewhat difficult.

Thoughts?

I guess the 5-spd version uses the wideband O2 and the auto uses a standard narrowband O2. Even then, on their site, they have the auto listed at $149 like they do for all other Civic's - so I"m not sure where the $85 price came from.

I didn't even know they made universal wideband O2's without a connector. There is typically a calibration resistor in the connector, so maybe call back and ask if he quoted you the right part. But yeah, I wouldn't bother wiring an O2 into my car - get one that plugs directly in.

Thoughts? Start saving.

I'd replace it as soon as possible. When an O2 sensor goes bad, your car starts running in a closed loop. It ignores all the real-time sensors, and sets to a default. You'll get bad gas mileage and decreased power.
