Ha! I did curl up in a ball to make sure that no part of me made it in to that shot ... heh

If your location is correct and indeed is South Carolina, then that CR-V is very, very far away from you. In the far corner of NW Canada.

Thanks for this extremely detailed write-up! I wanted to bump this up so other people can read it. I plan on doing this to my EJ1 soon.

Thanks. I just re-read it, and I feel like there are some things I would like to modify: eg., I actually suspect, now, that an evaporator assembly from a 98-00 Civic would be a better donor to perform the mod. I say this because, all things being equal, I think the layout of the where the thermostat wire snakes to and mounts is better suited to where the connector is located on the 94-95 & 96-97 Civic. Here's a photo from NOFX's write up, see where the thermostat connector is located?

Evaporator unit from a 98-00 Civic.

Compare this to the thermostat connector location on a 94-95 Civic (from my write-up):

You'd have to check to make sure the wiring for the connectors is the same, but I suspect that it would be a total plug and play swap, minus the actual filter components which you'd still need from a CR-V or Insight. I say this even though none of the part numbers match up directly, but see how there's overlap in my table I posted with Insight and 98-00 Civic part numbers? This is kinda the giveaway that I didn't see earlier.

A bump because I'll bet people are starting to think about summertime right about now and should know about this retrofit.

So, I'm going to redo my A/C setup pretty soon. If I understand this correctly, all that is needed to swap is essentially the evaporator unit correct? As for the thermostat, are you talking about the red circle? Thanks.

rickkane,

I used an evaporator from a 97-01 CR-V, and swapped over a thermostat from a 94-95 Civic. The red circle shows where it plugs into the main vehicle harness, but the actual thermostat is attached to the evaporator inside the assembly (see where the brown wire enters the box?).

There are some other options:

From a 98+ Integra:
  • You won't need to swap the thermostat
  • You'll need the air filter assembly from a CR-V/Insight, or buy it new.
From a 98-00 Civic:
  • I *believe* that this will swap over directly, even though a lot of the part numbers are different. Quite a few parts from the evap assembly on 98-00 Civics are listed as also on the 00+ 1st Gen USDM Insight, which has parts that are interchangeable with parts from the EDM 96-00 Civics and USDM 98-00 Civics. ie., more or less, it will probably work because the parts database says that a 99-00 USDM Civic assembly parts OR 96-00 EDM Civic parts will fit on a USDM 00+ Insight. Make sense? That wasn't clear.
  • I'm not sure, but you might need to swap the thermostat in from a 94-95 Civic?
  • You'll need the air filter assembly from a CR-V/Insight, or buy it new.
Note that this is still in the experimental stage since I haven't installed A/C in my vehicle yet.... this summer I promise.

From looking at your picture, it looks like it will fit just fine. My problem is, in the year or more I've been searching, I haven't found any CRV's and no Integras from the necessary years. I think you Canadians are quite lucky in your junkyard inventory! Also, it seems like the Civic one is a better choice? Your thoughts?

^^ I'm not so much concerned with the 98-00 Civic parts not fitting (it will!) so much as I am concerned that it wouldn't be compatible with the remainder of the Civic's A/C parts and wiring, etc.

I do think it's a slightly better choice (than an Integra or CR-V), as long as my hypothesis is true that it is fully compatible with 94-95 A/C, because I suspect they are way, way easier to find (must be a half dozen near me .. 6th Gen's at least - not sure if they're 98-00's). Also, the location where the thermostat plug mounts (top right) in is in the same place as it was in the original non-cabin filter 94-95 evap.

You've been looking for a YEAR, though? Well, if you're set on the CR-V one, note that there are two 1997 CR-Vs in the yard close to me. I'd be happy to remove the evap unit for you, and even include a 94-95 Civic thermostat if I find one there too. Won't be as cheap as you getting one yourself due to shipping, etc., but it's an option. I won't be able to go get it for a few weeks, though, at the earliest. You won't need to get an air filter assembly either (savings of $40 if bought new), so consider that in the mix too.

Alternatively, I could remove an evap from a 98-00 and grab the CR-V air filter, and voila, you're all set.

That's awesome! I will take you up on that. I can paypal you whatever the total cost, just let me know when you're ready to get it. I'd prefer the Civic evap, but I'll go with your recommendation as to the CRV or 98-00 Civic, so either way. I have a pm for you regarding the cargo light install. Thanks again.

Just did this mod since my compressor took a dump and I decided to do the crv evap box while I was at it. It works! MUCH better air flow even with the filter since there was a TON of mulch and dead debris in my civic evap box. It was practically a mini compost bin. I was able to convince a private salvage yard to allow me to pull it. The guy on the phone didn't want to let me, but another guy was there when I arrived and I got it for 50$!!! The phone guy wanted to pull it himself and wanted 75$. There a couple on ebay for around 50$, plus shipping, but since I was the first guinea pig to do this I wanted to see it in person and make measurements. It was identical except for the thermoswitch which was a 2 wire thing on the CRV and our civic needs a 3 wire switch. I just took my probe off my civic evap coil and swapped it out. No problems. I replaced the txv valve on the crv evap, flushed the evap (without the txv valve) along with the rest of the system (except for the new compressor, new dryer, and condenser) and pulled a vacuum then recharged it. I also read that the tube and fin condenser is not as efficient as the parallel flow types so I changed that out too. It blows so much harder and colder than ever before. It's still cold here in Cali, but I was able to make the outside air condense on my windows! Will have to hope for no leaks (I did change all o-rings) and for the summer until the true heat test comes. Right now I am very happy. I recommend if you are flushing that you get an air compressor that has at least 115psi pressure and larger than the 4 gallon model I had. It would last for about 8 seconds before I had to stop and wait for it to fill up again so I could either flush the solvent through or push the air through the lines to get rid of the solvent. May drive out to the desert just to test it! Woohoo!

Hi all , could some one tell me the wire colors of the connector starting from the right. I mean to check them in you car, of course if some one can. My EDM civic has only two pin connector , which is also described in the manual. It has Blue/Red and Yellow/White cables. Thank you in advance.

as i can see it goes like this.:
1. Yellow White 2. ? 3. ?

Bumping ttt. Just finished the retro of a 98 Integra Evap into my 93 Hatch. It works perfectly! I pulled the blower assembly out too while in there since I figured it would be better than my old one with a billion miles! I also pulled the wiring for the evap/blower out of the Integra too, since I didn't want to have to extend or splice any wiring. Just disconnect at the main connector underneath the radio, and then all is plug and play!! Another epic write up by deschlong! Here's a pic of my installed cabin filter with the Teg blower too. Yes, my dash was pulled out, but for other reasons, it's totally unnecessary to pull it out to do this retro.

Bump for those folks whose evaporators or condensers took a crap in the oncoming summer heat.

I also *finally* have all the parts and tools I need to complete this mod - right down to all the O-rings and A/C flush, vacuum pump, manifold set, PAG oil -- everything.

Hey deschlong, let me know what your high and low side pressures are when you are finished charging. Are you going to use R134a or that redtek stuff? I have a feeling that my system isn't charged correctly.

Yes I agree with you. I think I can do it myself to do the Cabin air filter retrofit. :D I hope that there is still CRV there. :D

Did these retros provide you with colder air?

In my 95, I just wish the fan blew more air. Even on high, it's barely nothing compared to my GM truck. Feels like it's barely moving air.

There's a good chance the ductwork and/or evap is clogged with debris, thus restricting the flow of air. This cabin filter will eliminate that problem, provided it's cleaned and/or replaced regularly.

which is the better unit for 92-95 civic with a/c? how's everything working? does the original wiring work fine or is the donor car's needed?

So I've been having a/c problems and the system is empty so I was thinking about doing this with an evap assembly from a 98-00 USDM civic, but do you know if I still need the evap for a USDM 95 civic dx hatch?
