[DIY] - How to use an OEM switch with your 99/00 aftermarket fog lights
I have decided that it is about time I contribute to the site, so here is my write-up on how to use an OEM fog light switch / button with your aftermarket fogs. I don’t know if this is a repost, but I didn’t see anything covering it in my travels.
OEM Switch: $16
Harness: $2
Time: Priceless
Beats buying the under dash harness and switch from Honda for $16+$25=$40+
First off the No.1 complaint about the aftermarket fogs, is the reliability of the switch. I can only agree… I have had my fogs in for a few months and the aftermarket switch has already melted itself together. It felt and looked like a POS to begin with. So due to the reputation of the aftermarket switch I purchased an OEM switch from the dealership at the same time I purchased my aftermarket fogs, knowing it would come in handy eventually.
I usually don’t like to cut corners and I wasn’t about to use some spade connectors on the back side of the OEM switch, so I took a trip to the junkyard and a long walk in the import section before I found a pigtail that would be compatible with the switch. You could always spend $25 at the dealership for the OEM under dash harness, but that isn‘t very fun.
I don’t know if there are any other harnesses that will work, but I cut mine off the power lock harness (inside door panel) on a ~1995 Honda Accord, perfect fit.
Below are the pinouts for the OEM and Aftermarket switches.
All you need are some basic tools, and little wiring experience.
I am sure there are a lot of different aftermarket fogs out there but a lot of them utilize the same style of wiring. If you aren’t sure about yours go pick up a 12v test light to verify what wires go to what.
All you need is a Ground source (wired as two separate on the switch, but can be common), 12v switched (parking lights), and a lead to the relay to send the +
So basically snip the end off the aftermarket harness and wire the corresponding wires to the Accord lock harness.
On the aftermarket harness there are two wires that come from the parking light, I just eliminated one, because it is not needed. I chose to solder for piece of mind.
So go from this:
To this!!!
Let me know if I missed anything, and I will try to answer any questions. Thanks HT!

Damn, man. This will help a lot of people out. I know the aftermarket switch for the 96-00 Civic is a POS. It feels so flimsy and cheap.
The only thing that will prevent people from doing this is obtaining the switch for interior Type K. Type F switches are still available, but the Type K switches are discontinued. I also believe the switch harness is discontinued from Honda.
This procedure will also work for 96-98 Civic fogs.

Re: (BlueIntegraBoy)
That is what I thought, I was expecting to end up with the wrong color switch, but when I went in to order it, the parts guy said he could order one in. When it did come in, it showed as a 4 door switch Part No. 08V31-S01-160H and K4D19, matched my interior so I couldn't be happier. I was also glad I stumbled upon the accord power lock harness, to make the install a little cleaner/easier. Thanks for your help too!
Edit: Here is what I picked up, I don't know if it is still available...
http://www.hondaautomotivepart...mber+
Edit 2: Yeah I have type F interior so that makes sense now.

Fog Light Switch part numbers:
08V31-S01-160H (Excel Charcoal) AVAILABLE
08V31-S01-160G (Classy Gray) DISCONTINUED
08V31-S01-1F0F (Medium Taupe) DISCONTINUED
The switch is $4.68 from http://www.bernardiparts.com
Switch Harness part numbers:
08V31-S01-10107 SWITCH, HARNESS (99-00)
08V31-S01-10007 SWITCH, HARNESS (96-98)
The switch harness (99-00) is $18.08 and (96-98) is $36.88 from http://www.bernardiparts.com
The switch harnesses are still available, the 99-00 fog harness isn't available, but the 96-98 is. I can't see why you can't use a 99-00 switch harness in a 96-98. It's half the price.

I think excel charcoal (F) is the light gray, and the classy gray (k) is the dark gray, like the EM1 interior.
The OEM switch I installed in the above pics is the type F interior color.

Yeah, I think that is what confused me about what color switch I was going to end up with.

Re: (saywhat)
I did mine a long time ago and it was easy, from what I understand all 96-00 coupes are prewired for the fog lights, not sure about the hatchback or sedans. Only parts I needed was the switch, the harness that goes from the steering column to the fog light switch, relay and the harness that goes in the bumper that connects both lights. The wiring is already there that goes from under the dash into the engine compartment to where you connect the bumper harness too. When I did mine I forgot to get the relay and found the one for the horn works so later when inspection time came around I got another relay so both will work now.
so now mine is factory when you hit the highbeams the fogs go off, I dunno about other states but here in va you will not pass inspection without them doing that.

Thanks for the write up! It really made swapping out my switch easier. My plug came off of an older integra, da style I believe its called. It was just some random dash plug because the dash was already pulled off in the junkyard.
