Default How do you get the tires off the rim? And how to paint the edge on your rim?

I looked around, and there seems to be a tool used to get it off, I wonder if I can do it without it and not damaging the rim. I read posts about painting rims, but none of them show how they got it off. Someone know a ghetto way that works?

Also I saw people made their own time attack with red paint around the edge of the rim. How exactly do you tape it so that it's round and smooth? I can never tape it in a perfect circle.

I still want to use my tires, just want to get the rim off, spray paint it then put the tires back on. While the tires are off maybe paint the brake caliper too. I went to autozone, and they said I need a special tool or take it to wal-mart and have them take it off for $5, but then I'll have to stay at wal-mart and paint it there since I don't have any extra wheels to put on.

I hope there is a way I can do this at home without their tool, and be able to do 1 tire/rim at a time with my spare tire tool. Anyone know a good way? Or does all these have to be done professionally besides the painting part.

By the way, anyone know how to tape the edge of the rim like those guys who made their own time attack rims? I don't think I can tape it to make a perfect ring.

1.- remove tire
2.- instale spare
3.- drive to a shop
4.- dismount the tire from the rim
5.- go home
6.- paint wheel
7.- drive to a shop
8.- mount the tire on the rim
9.- drive home
10.- remove spare
11.- reinstall painted wheel
12.- repeat 1-11 3 times
13.- done

yeah I thought about that, that's more than a day's job considering you'll have to wait for the paint to dry and stuff. But I guess I'll probably ended up doing it like that. It'd be funny driving on the road with half of the rims painted, and the rest untouched.

If you want to paint the rim while it's still mounted, deflate the tire a bit so you can shove something in between the tire and the rim to protect the tire from overspray, and then just put the paint on it. Just make sure whatever you put in the rim to protect the tire is extended out enough to protect the body from pant as well.

Just a thought, it'd be really funny if I ended up with that back and forth from shop idea. WHen I get 1 rim painted, 2 untouched, and a spare tire all on the same time. hahaha

Maybe I should do it while mounted. When you say deflat your tire, you think I can still run on those tires after I'm done with them all, just enough to get to a shop and put the air back up?

u just need to make sure that u always have a regular tire up front so u dont mess up the LSD. so u are going to be rotating and making alot of trips. u might wanna just deflate the tires a little bit and put some blue painters tape over the rubber and mask off the body so it doesnt get sprayed. or u could do it much easier by just taking off one wheel at a time while the car is on the jack and then spraying it on the ground. much less worry of spray on the body or on the brake system. u could still spray ur calipers that way. they could dry together! food for thought

yeah that sounds like the plan, I bought the paint already, but I think I'll wait til summer comes around first, then do it. It's still cold outside like in the 50s... Want to wait for the perfect condition to spray my rims.

Use playing cards to tape off the tires. Im not sure how you would make a nice clean line for making some ghetto time attacks though.
