Hi Folks;

Newbie here.
I have an 03 Corolla and want to get a new 2014 Civic EX 1.8L soon.

Does the Civic use a spin-on or a cannister type oil filter?
Does the engine have a timing chain or timing belt?
What oil? 0W-20? 5W-20?

Yup, they all went to 0w20 years back. AND I assure you the engines don't like it... they quiet down quite a bit if you switch to even 5w30 - sad. They rather have fuel economy than worry about how long the engine lasts.

I change my own oil, and prefer the simplicity of a spin on filter.

The timing chain will not have to be changed like a belt and will
last the life of the engine ( I hope)

bs. depends on the oil you use. 0w oil can quieten down the engine depending on the weight. Have you used 0w-30 GC or 0w-40 Mobil 1 European formula with this engine?
Way better than the 5w crap that Honda dealership use.

That also depends on where you live and how your climate is!

You don't need to run a 0w20 if you live in California but if you live in a colder climate like Alaska the 0w20 will perform better then a 5w20 in colder temperatures but won't be as good as the 5w20 in the warmer temperatures.

This all depends on temperature!

Well that may be true to some degree, I think it depends on the operating temperature of the engine more then the outside temp. The thermostat controls the engine temp no matter if 20 degrees or 90 degrees outside.

Actually no... In a colder climate area most people will run a 5w30 in the winter time as the cold temperatures could cause an oil like the 10w30 to get to slushy making it harder for the engine to get the proper lubrication. Yes during driving operation it will be fine but the damage will be done during the cold start up until it gets to it's optimal driving temperature.

A 10w30 will be better in the hot conditions due to it being thicker then the 5w30 which will break down easier and making the oil to thin and evaporating. This causing bearing metal to increase.
