Timing Belt - When to change
Hello Everyone,
I checked in the FAQ and did a search for timing belt/chain and didn't find anything.
I just had my lock/unlock actuator changed and the mechanic asked if I had my timing belt changed. I didn't know you had to change it and he said I need to change it between 90k & 110k miles. I have 108k. He told me labor and parts $575. That's the belt, water pump and all the gaskets.
Just checking with the people that know!
Thanks, Al

Re: Timing Belt - When to change (allen1466)
My wife's car is nearing 100k too... so I'd like to know too.
I think it may have already been changed though, because according to the Honda Service records we got from the previous owner, they had to replace the water pump at 86,000 miles for some reason. But it doesn't mention a timing belt as well... but the paper work was only an estimate, not the actual repair order/invoice.
BUT, as you mentioned, (the intelligent thing anyways) they should have replaced the belt and the water pump both while it's all apart. And 575 bucks is CHEAP AS HELL for all that, if you ask me.

Re: Timing Belt - When to change (Miracle)
I would follow the manual, it is there for a reason plus if you still have your warranty ( i know some honda's have a lifetime warranty now) it saves your butt.

2002 Civic Owner's Manual pages 200-203
Maintenance Schedule for Normal Conditions: Replace timing belt, and inspect water pump every 110,000 miles (176,000km) or 7 years. It's the same under "Severe" conditions.
You should replace it sooner (60,000 miles or 100,000km) if you regularly drive your car in one or more of these conditions:
*In very high temperatures (over 110F, 43C)
*In very low temperatures (under -20F, -29C)
