Default Seatbelt Sensor SRS light

The SRS light has been on in my dad's 2001 EX for a few thousand miles now. He took it to a mechanic who traced the light back to the sensor in the driver seatbelt. This sensor is supposed to lock up the seatbelt when the airbag is deployed in an accident.

Does anyone know if this (safety issue) is covered under some sort of lifetime warranty? The car currently has about 125k miles.

you can reset the light or take it to honda and they will charge you to reset it.

Why would I reset the light if it's just going to come back again? It's a safety issue here, not just an annoying CEL or something.

I believe it is covered by a lifetime warranty. You could call your local Honda service department and tell them what your mechanic traced the problem to and ask if it's covered.

Forgot to update this thread...

my dad took it to the dealership and had it fixed for free under lifetime warranty.

Make sure that the seatbelt is your problem or you will be charged for the work.

Icon2 SRS light honda civic EX 2001 bad seat belt buckle

I read the post about the SRS light being ON in Honda CIVIC. I have a similar problem on my Honda CIVIC EX 2001 with about 90,000 miles in it. The SRS light is ON and I took it to the Honda dealer who did a diagnostic testing for $85 and then came up and told that the driver seat belt has a bad buckle and the seat belt has to be replaced. He was estimating $250 for the parts and labor. When I looked for it in the internet I found your post which is closely depicting my scenario and you had mentioned that seat belts have life time warranty and it has to be replaced for free.

Do you think replacing the seat belt is still covered? I would think my Honda dealer should know that but I am beginning to think that they are cheating me. Is there an official Honda website that I can go to find this information? I need to be able to talk to them with some official information.

Can someone help me with this?
Thanks in Advance.

Default Air Bag Light On..?

I have a 2005 civic ex 4dr. when i first got it, the seat belt bell drove me crazy. i unplugged the sensor under the seat and was satisfied for about 10 miles when the seat belt and air bag light were bothering me. after i plugged it back in and put my seat belt on, the air bag light was still there. is this normal? i was gonna reset the battery to see if that does it, but i figured id check here 1st, anybody else had this happen?

What you are going to have to do is unplug the sensor again and then go pop the hood and unplug your battery. Now after you unplug the battery you can go plug the sensor back in and then hook the battery back up. Make sure you have your radio code btw.

last update :
change my buckle switch -- SRS still on
and do the RESET srs with this instuctions :
http://www.geocities.com/myintegra96/srs.html
final result : SRS light gone !!!
so my conclusion :
1. try to do reset first,

if not works (because of ....read last words in instructions :
- Make sure you have the right connector and that a module or some other part of the SRS system is not malfunctioning. ) do :
2. change buckle switch at driver side (often to use) and do the reset again.

if still not works, hmmmm.... bring to Honda dealer and prepare $$$

good luck

I have the same SRS problem. reset it like a dozen times, light still stays on.

Also I have to slam my my drivers seatbelt into the buckle to get it to latch. I'm guessing my SRS is on because of the buckle issue like many others.

I just called my local honda dealership.

basically they scan my SRS system for free. if it ends up being the faulty seatbelt they fix it, for free

if they scan it and it turns out to be something else that isn't covered under warranty like a impact sensor, then they tell me what it is and we go from there.

still no charge.

I think it's slightly more so the people who don't ask the right questions up front about being charged, are the ones who do get charged.

and the ones who ask the right questions don't get haggled.

I have never heard about it here in Quebec. They charge for anything. The problem above is very common thing on 2000 and up Hondas. There is a dirt getting stuffed inside a buckle switch or a contact points getting worn down.It has a specific code ,so don't think that all the SRS light would be the same thing! However it worth a try just shooting some brake cleaner inside the buckle and clearing the codes, you might get lucky. If not -change it!!Everutime the SRS light is on IT WILL NOT ALLOW FOR DEPLOYMENT OF AN AIR BAG!!!!.So just for safety of you and your family change the damn thing! It is not more expensive than life.

Yes those purchased cars distributed through American Honda get a lifetime warranty on seatbelts, it might be a federal law in the USA. No such luck for those of us who purchased cars distributed through Honda Canada Inc.

Honda America covers the buckle and seatbelt under the lifetime warranty, the only thing you might have to pay for is the diag.

I just had my 2003 Honda Element at 122,000 Kms checked for SRS Air bag warning on in a Honda dealer. Charged $110+tax for Diag. I have been told the driver side buckle sensor is not working. The OPDS is 09-3(This is the code I requested). The dealer asking $247.56 for the parts and $275 for the labour. Total comes $522.56. The Diag fee will be waived if I do it there. I asked if it is covered under life time time warranty. Answer is no. I am still wondering. I am in Canada btw.
Any seggestions? How about DIY? Thanks!

mine went on about 3-4 months ago... I haven't checked to see which seat belt yet but yeah, not covered in canada as a tb notice... stupid i think... best be is look online for seat belt assembly, car-parts, ebay etc... find yourself a good price... as for a DIY, should be in hanes i think... its online or $15 at c-tire...
