A silencer is a flange that mounts to the tip/end of your exhaust. In my opinion, I think they look like crap, and totally take away from the aesthetics of an aftermarket exhaust.
A resonator would be an expansion/contraction pipe that mounts before your muffler. That might reduce the audio output of your exhaust enough to make it withstandable. It takes more work, but I think it's the better choice.

silencer is cheap, some are made for certain brands of mufflers so they look good and keep the tuned sound, resonator is more expensive, has to be welded in, but sound is gonna be quiter and sound alot better. resonator is your best bet.

don't assume that. eh, my catback came with a silencer, it was the first thing i took out. it worked prefectly though, instead of FREAKIN loud it was just noticable. you should already have a resonator on any exhaust. it should be the resonator, then the canister which makes all the noise. just get a silencer. is it a full catback?

Not all exhaust systems come with resonators, this keeps costs down. Get a resonator and be done with it.
Silencers are cheap and look ugly.

A resonator will lower and smoothen your exhaust tone without restricting your exhaust to the extent that a silencer does. Yes, it does require welding, but IMO, it is the better route than going with a silencer.
